Do you wish you could make neat symbols like < in The Consumerist comments? Here’s how!
Commenter larrymac pointed out using left angle brackets make your browser think you’re making HTML and will ignore everything after the bracket. So what you can do is use something called an “HTML entity.” Whazzat?
Type &X; and replace the X with the appropriate HTML entity. For instance, to make < show up, replace the X with lt. To put in “your 2 ¢” replace the X with cent. A longer list of HTML entities can be found here.
Have fun and remember to only use this power for good.

Add here come the comments filled with wingdings….
Since Consumerist doesn’t really allow html in the comments anyway, why not do the conversions server-side and save us all the headache?
I do not get how something that is already on my keyboard is neat. Unless it is neat because it requires me to press shift when I want to use it.
And now I see! When I try to type in &
It’s amazing that the Movable Type developers apparently haven’t figured out the concept of HTML Encoding yet…
I find that using the ALT key codes for (most) symbols work directly, like ALT+0162 for the ¢ sign.. I’ve never really had a need for the left bracket symbol, but I’ll keep the HTML Entity method handy just in case I ever have a need for it.
As I mentioned on the thread the other day, entities are OS/Hardware independent. e.g. there’s no alt-key on my HTC EVO.
Ah, good point Larry.

&ne
≠
Sweet, can finally use the ≠ sign instead of the != or whatever..

&ne &dagger One more try?
dont forget the semi colon

considering it took you about 7 minutes to type that, i would say no with .11 character per minute ratio. but it always looks cool though…
errr .11 character per second rather… my bad.

My 2¢ is that you don’t need HTML entities if you know how to use your keyboard.
Italics just to prove that comments have always supported basic HTML markup, and of course, the ¢ is just basic Unicode.
The HTML entities is primarily for symbols that *do* get eaten by the forum’s code. < and > are commonly eaten, especially when someone tries to do particular emotions or textual gestures.
< — is a fan of the non-breaking space, which was a staple of her HTML table-coding days
<html>
You can get most of the symbols from Character map: Accessories > System Tools > Character Map.
Ö ¶ 閽
Please show me the character map icon on anything that’s not running Windows.
On a mac, you could go to sys prefs, international, input menu and set up your languages, then use the character palettes via the flag that appears on the bar. (been a while since I set that up so this may be a bit off)

2¢ without HTML.
Hold ALT while typing 155 on the keypad. You can type most any character this way if you have an ascii conversion chart.

Or Mac with logical keymappings, or a custom keymap for Windows that copies the Mac (so, AltGr-4 gives this: ¢).
My favorite is one I found by accident; 0149, or • … I use it for bulleted lists all the time. And I tend to annoy people in Pokémon forums because I’m almost always the only person who uses the é; (130) …
I am a fancy showing-off so-n-so

seems like a useless article. any website that does not automatically encode html is open to exploitation by various methods. I would be surprised to see if this actually works.
