Oregon Lawmakers Cool With BPA In Baby Bottles
Most people seem to agree that baby bottles that include the chemical BPA are probably less than awesome to use to feed your baby. States and municipalities have banned BPA, but the beleaguered chemical has finally found some allies in the Oregon state legislature, which voted down a bill that sought to ban it, the Oregonian reports:
They also warned the ban in Senate Bill 1032 could be a first step toward banning the chemical from the lining of canned products, which they said would hurt Oregon food processors.
“Nobody wants to vote against nursing moms and mothers,” said Sen. Jason Atkinson, R-Central Point, who said he believes BPA is “bad” and his family opted not to use bottles containing it. But BPA opponents “want to go into Oregon’s food processing industries,” Atkinson said.
The move makes political sense. Food processing industries, after all, are more reliable campaign donors than babies.
