Dress Your Daughter As Pirate Wench For Halloween
"Gather any group of parents and you'll quickly hear about how the choices of costumes have gone from witch and princess to sexy witch and pouty porn princess," writes The Examiner in their roundup of sexually charged Halloween costumes marketed at tween and adolescent girls. Prudishness aside, I think I draw the line at a costume for young girls with the word "wench" in the title.

Sorry, I know this is slightly off topic, but because it concerns "pirate candy" it may help save someones life ...
The pirate coin candies are not safe to eat currently.

Ugh. Since when did it become the norm that every female costume is sexy? From now on all of the costumes will be sexy. Like "Sexy Terri Schiavo", "Sexy Joe the Plumber", "Sexy Joe Biden" or the newly popular "Sexy Ashley Todd".
I am going to steal a page from Gawker and go as the Sexy Montauk Monster.
@ALaterDayTD: When I have kids, I am going to dress them up as sexy UNICEF boxes. That way they can be hot and people can stick money into their slot. It will prepare them for their future as a stripper.
Your daughter's skimpy costume is going to make it difficult for your neighbor to "demonstrate that he is making a sincere effort to change the direction of his life."

Are you sure it isn't just the exact same outfit, being sold under different names and sizes? A full length dress for a 6 year old would make a "sexy" mini-skirt for an adult...
@shorty63136: Great article, the best line is: "Everywhere you look, there's a Naughty Nurse or a Slinky Vampire or a Just Trying To Pay For College Police Officer."
Bah.
That costume is positively tame. Keep in mind that these costumes are being sold for little girls:

Apparently training kids to be crack whore diva Barbie sluts is starting younger and younger these days
@Alex7575: While the term "wench" has taken on a negative connotation modernly, the term when used with words like "bar" and "pirate" as they relate to the time period, merely meant "young unmarried girl", not sexually promiscuous. A pre-pubescent girl is far more "wench" then some of the 55+ year old boobs I've seen squeezed into bodices at a renassaince faire. Besides, the costume is more Disney than Fredericks of Hollywood.
@AMetamorphosis: Well, to be more accurate, Sherwood Brands Pirates Goild Milk Chocolate coins sold in Canada are not safe to eat.
@Primate: ...because the media's obsession with sexualizing little girls is TOTES COOL and should just be ignored. Right?
NO.
@amuro98: Well, they are using different models, and the name changes as you move through the ad into the different sections for age groups.
@TinyBug:
It's not just Halloween costumes, it's everyday clothing for girls. I have a 10 yr old and they sell low rise pants in her size! Since my wife and I buy her clothing she doesn't get stuff like that.
@LucyTuzy: That's awesome if you are creative, but if I tried to make a costume for myself or anyone else, it'd turn out um ... well, scary, but not in a good way.
@Meggers: Joe Biden needs no prefix, Joe Biden already has the sexy!
Seriously though, I don't know, and I love that "sexy" just means "shorter and with more cleavage".
Okay, I have to admit: if pirate costumes for girls were that good and that easy to get in 1986, I'd have been totally over the moon. I've wanted to grow up to be a mighty pirate since I was about three.
(As I accept that "mighty pirate" is a hard career to come by these days, I've chosen instead not to bother growing up.)
All of that said, this is positively tame compared to a slew of the options out there. "Wench" isn't bad when you see costumes out and out going for "sexy."
Seems the only thing dirty about the word Wench is in some of your Archaic dirty minds.

@Goodnightbabytron: Were the pimps working the crowd? Don't make me slap you Commander Cody! Get out there and get me my money!
To be serious, that is atrocious.
@Git Em SteveDave loves this guy-->: I hope this gets figured out before Hanukkah. Pirate Coins/Gelt. Same thing different wrapper.
@rpm773: I find it interesting that the letter requires them to "stay at home, turn off outside lights and not answer the door."
Why require them to stay at home? That's like parading a desert cart in front of someone on a diet when they know they can't eat it.
@jdhuck: My daughter got a costume similar to this, but without the boots and sword. I think the title just said "Pirate Girl". I don't see the problem though, the costume isn't showing any skin really, and the skirt goes down to the knees. Perhaps it's the word "Wench" that they have a problem with. Personally, when we go costume/clothes shopping, I don't let my girl get anything that's inappropriate, but I've never not bought something simply because of a label, unless the clothing in question was innappropriate
I just don't understand the problem here. The market should determine whether or not these costumes are unacceptable.
If you don't have a problem with your kid wearing this stuff then that's your business. If you don't want your kid wearing it, don't buy it.
Leave the parenting to the parents and mind your own business.
@numberoneasa: Which brings a different but also interesting point. If the same exact costume were to be sold with identical descriptions and images, at Fredericks vs the Disney Store I'm willinng to bet that people would be disgusted at one and think the other one's cute.
@Primate: Yes. Last year my daughter dressed as a pirate. Not a pirate wench, not a sexy pirate, not a hot pirate and not even a cute pirate, just a pirate. She looked like a girl dressed as a pirate, not a girl dressed as a prostitute dressed as a pirate. We chose the costume and would have passed on it if it had been inappropriate.
@little stripes: Which media are you talking about? I don't think the news media is "sexualizing" little girls, if anything they point out these types of things with feigned surprise and disgust. Are you talking about TV shows and movies? Which shows are trying to turn <10-year olds into hookers?
@Alex7575: Sadly, I think you're correct. This is right up there with pageants for little girls. Kiddy porn and pimping moms, or a teaching moment for poise?
@Goodnightbabytron: I remember that at a store for halloween they had a hat that was obviously a pimp hat, with the big feather and all.. but the tag said "Big Daddy Hat".. Right.
So the parents could claim that their sons weren't actually pimps.
@Primate: I think it's good to speak out about it, just as it's good to speak out against anything inappropriate being marketed to children. If someone was making "bag of jagged glass" toys and selling them at Target, I'd hope people wouldn't think that not buying it was enough.

Happy Halloween, the only holiday that encourages girls to look like sluts!
