Countrywide Home Loans Wins Consumerist's Worst Company In America Contest

39896 views

Duhn duhn da duhn! Envelope please... yes, America has voted and... the Worst Company in America award goes to.... Countrywide Home Loans (now owned by Bank of America)! The final vote was...

...6098 to 4826, a solid trouncing of Comcast, which had been favored to win by many commenters. After 67 rounds and five months of fierce battling, Countrywide climbed to the top of the poop pile and affirmed its well-deserved status as the absolute nadir of capitalism. It looks like in the end, we all decided that the destruction of a giant chunk of the American economy by greed and fraud was more reprehensible than an unsatisfactory internet experience.

The Lucky Golden Shit award will get shipped to Angelo "Golden Boy" Mozilo, former Countrywide CEO, who steered the ship of financial doom from its inception to the height of its unfettered raping of the American Dream, just as soon as we find a good mailing address for him. The receipt for the Lucky Golden Ship will get mailed to Bank of America CEO Kenneth D. Lewis, along with a certificate of completion.

Congratulations to our top 10 runners up

Comcast
Walmart
Bank of America
American Airlines
Capital One
Diebold
Exxon
United Health Care
Blue Cross Blue Shield
Microsoft

You're champions, all of you. Better luck next year.

This is a test using rich text formatting and html links. It's the generic "company" ad that should appear on all posts with the Company category if they don't have an ad attached to a specific company.

Well, I was pretty hopeful comcast would win, but congrats Countrywide.

user-pic

So what does the runner up get? Any ideas?

Silver urinal maybe?

user-pic

I demand a recount!

user-pic

God bless America.

I'd like to be a fly on the wall when the shit is received.

user-pic

@MercuryPDX: Golden plunger for the surely clogged golden toilet. That way, they'll all be connected forever. The end.

user-pic

6100 to 4800 is only a difference of 1300 votes or 11% of total voters...

Countrywide: Their business model ruined their company and eventually drove them out of business, although they were acquired by BoA.

Comcast: Their business model actually keeps them in business, but the populous hates them so much they actually put them up against a company who basically wrote itself out of business and helped take out a large chuck of Americas "wealth" and economy.

Quite honestly I think it shows Comcast just how bad they are perceived by the public.

user-pic

What's the "Lucky Golden Ship"? Is that what the first mate of the Exxon Valdez would have gotten when he took over for Hazlewood and tried to save the ship? So BoA's getting the Golden Ship because they tried to steer things right? Or maybe I'm reading too much into a misprint. :)

user-pic

Comcast: They can't even win when it comes to being the worst!

user-pic

There it is the biggest douche in the universe.

user-pic

Is there any way to tell how many of the Countrywide votes came from Comcast Corporate offices?

user-pic

@foxbat2500: I thought that John Edwards won that on South Park...

user-pic

> destruction of a giant chunk of the American economy by greed and fraud

That's how they got my vote.

user-pic

I think the poll was "rigged". If the economy wasn't in peril, I'm sure comcast would have won.

Comcast, you are in next years contest!

user-pic

@blue_duck: Actually, that was John Edward(no s).

John Edward is the smarmy psychic. John Edwards is the smarmy politician.

user-pic

I really think that the runner up deserves at least a certificate if not a silver squirt.

user-pic

I'm pretty mad that Countrywide won simply because the contest is such a great idea, and the thought of some executive receiving a golden shit in the mail is just perfection. Granted, they were a shitty company, but Comcast is worse and who is going to get the award now? Some douche at BofA? It's kind of a hollow statement to send an insult at someone who had nothing to do with why you're insulting him.

user-pic

@pigbearpug: Read the posting again. The award is going to be mailed to the ex-CEO. BofA will simply receive a certificate of completion.

user-pic

@pigbearpug: Mozillo is still at CW, I think he's at one of the Simi Valley-area offices.

He still deserves it, with the stock dumping, economy pillaging, and general shadiness he promotes.

user-pic

*sniff* I'm so proud of you, Countrywide. You have come so far in such a short amount of time. I knew you had it in you all along!

user-pic

@Barry White Stripes, Office LW: He's just not a CEO anymore.

/Having trouble finishing thoughts

user-pic

@ Consumerist: You guys should have held a press conference on the front steps of Countrywide's headquarters to award the trophy.

user-pic

I really really really hope y'all get a response from either of the two... and that y'all post it! :D

user-pic

FIVE months?? Really?? Sheesh. Maybe a shorter time would be better. No wonder it seemed so drawn out.

As for the "winner"... meh. I didn't have a dog in this fight.

user-pic

@pigbearpug: I can't believe you think Comcast deserves it more. Personally I don't think they even should have made the top 10. I can think of many reasons why the rest of the 8 and others not in the top 10 have done more actual damage than Comcast's shitty service/support (and yes, I have dealt with them).

user-pic

@linus: ... but the economy IS in peril, partially because of Countrywide, which rigged the poll, which got them the award, which... ah, screw it. Anyway, isn't that the point of giving them the award?

user-pic

Ballot stuffing by Comcast employees I tell ya!

user-pic

How can Best Buy NOT be even in the top 10? That's stupid. I'm not playing anymore. *pout*

user-pic

@Pro-Pain: Eh, check back for the Consumerist Cold Hard Worst Company In America Power Rankings, sponsored by Coors Light.

user-pic

"You're champions, all of you. Better luck next year."

Nice, Ben... Now I got Queen going thru my mind.... Nothing like envisioning Ken Lewis and Angelo Mozilo embraced, giving all those other companies the finger singing "Weeeee are the CHAMPIONS, my FRIEENNDDS"

user-pic

huh, I am still surprised walmart didn't go further, but I really thought comcast would take it, shows ya what I know.

user-pic

@drjayphd:

How about the Consumerist Biggest Douche in America, sponsored by Summer's Eve?

user-pic

Still think Starbucks should have won.

user-pic

Countrywide FTW!!!

....duh

user-pic

Shouldn't this award be going to the government regulators who allowed Countrywide to loan to people based on "stated income"?

user-pic

Fitting that B of A gets the turd through proxy, since they are just as bad.

user-pic

@Ein2015: Hmm...Consumerist probably has the CEO's email. Maybe someone (or a few hundred people) could send him an email of congratulations on his company's achievement.

But then again, his email address is probably a Countrywide address and since he is gone as CEO, it probably got deleted.

user-pic

I like how this says you're going to send the receipt for the turd to BofA... you should actually bill them for it. See what happens.

user-pic

Anyone can spray paint a turd gold and print out a certificate. I might just give out my own awards.

user-pic

Will Bank of America's CEO Kenneth D. Lewis have to pay back the Consumerist the number on the receipt?

user-pic

The runner up should be sent the "Silver Pooplet: The Shit That Almost Was".

You know... when you can't quite drop the whole enchilada, and instead wind up with a couple of tater tots? (Pardon me, I was just at the Del Taco post).

user-pic

A valid shipping address? LOL and just what glorious company are you planning on using? UPS? FedEx? DHL? USPS? Come on guys, geez if you really want it to get there, hand deliver it!! With what we know about the 'shipping' companies, I wouldn't give ya a plugged nickel bet on it making there LMAO!!!

user-pic

Comcast not winning goes against everything the consumerist stands for. Just because countrywide has been in the news a bit lately doesn't qualify them more than comcast.

user-pic

@desterion: countrywide helped ruin the economy. comcast provides a crappy service. i'd say countrywide deserves the coveted spot more.

user-pic

I think Wally-World should be the number one worst company in America, Countrywide should be number two, American Airlines number three, AT&T number four and McDonald's number five. Together, they make up the "5 Pillars of Corporate Evil!"
