The news out of athletic apparel company Under Armour’s latest report to investors isn’t great, but it has also taught its leaders something very important: not to depend too much on any one retailer, even if that retailer is a nationwide sporting goods chain. You don’t have to look very far to find a female who loves Star Wars (here’s where I raise my hand) but over at Under Armour, it seems the company thinks only members of the male population are into buying merchandise tied to the franchise. Its “Imperial Collection” of branded T-shirts and clothing lists two categories under “All Genders” — Men and Boys.
Under Armour is apologizing and promising to stop selling a T-shirt dubbed “Band of Ballers” after complaints that its image of basketball players raising a hoop closely mirrored the style of the Marine Corps War Memorial. That memorial is based on a famous photograph taken of soldiers raising a U.S. flag on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima during World War II.
