National Ice Cream Day is officially July 17, or so the ice cream gods have proclaimed, but many businesses are either starting the festivities early or extending the sweet treat deals beyond Sunday. Here’s what you’ll need to know to get your brain freeze on. [More]

If you actually do scream for ice cream (right there with ya) and you hate paying for stuff, today is your day: it’s Ben & Jerry’s annual Free Cone Day at stores in 28 countries. Dessert seekers can score a complimentary cone of their favorite flavor between 12 p.m. and 8 p.m. at participating locations. [via Ben & Jerry’s]
Here’s how you get a free small vanilla cone today from Dairy Queen: stop by a restaurant and ask for one. That’s all you need to do. Officially, the event is a Children’s Miracle Network fundraiser, and you should make a donation if you’re able, but the cones are free either way. You get one per customer, for as long as the store is open today. [More]
Last month, Ben & Jerry’s celebrated Free Cone Day, and Dairy Queen observed the non-holiday a month before that. Now it’s the turn of competitor Häagen-Dazs to do the same. Well, only at its shops in the United States, and only a kiddie-size cone, but a tiny free cone is better than no cone at all. The festivities will be from 4-8 PM today in your local time zone, provided that the company has a location near you.
There’s an annual event at Cold Stone Creamery outlets called the World’s Largest Ice Cream Social. Part of the chain’s September fund-raising drive for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, it’s billed as an event offering free ice cream during a three-hour period on a certain day. Melissa had put this on her calendar weeks in advance, because she’s on a budget, and hey: free ice cream! But she arrived at the mall to find employees posted at the Cold Stone door, not allowing anyone in unless they made a donation first. That’s not free, that’s a cover charge. Isn’t it?
