Macy’s Announces 68 Store Closings Across The Country; Here’s The List Image courtesy of Nicholas Eckhart
The holiday season is over, and it’s time for retailers to figure out exactly how terrible the holiday season was. Macy’s, which is still trying to figure out a business model for department stores in general, announced its quarterly results along with a long list of stores across the country that are closing.
The company put out a press release about its plans to “streamline its store portfolio, intensify cost efficiency efforts and execute its real estate strategy.” In English: Macy’s is closing a bunch of stores, and selling some other ones with plans to lease some back. This is part of the company’s previously-announced plans to close 100 stores in the coming years.
One store that the company is selling and closing is the former downtown Minneapolis flagship location of Dayton’s department store, which had been at that spot since 1902. Dayton’s was the original parent company of Target: the company sold the less-successful department store division off to the national department store conglomerate that we now call Macy’s in 2005.
