4C Grated Cheese Recalled Because Salmonella Doesn’t Taste Great On Pasta

Thinking of having a nice spaghetti dinner tonight? How about a few slices of cheesy pizza? If your plans also include topping those dishes with grated parmesan or romano cheese you might want to check the label, so as to make sure you’re not sprinkling salmonella on your dinner.

Brooklyn-based 4C Foods Corp. has announced a nationwide recall of eight varieties of its parmesan cheese after tests revealed the products could be contaminated with Salmonella.

According to a notice posted with the Food & Drug Administration, the recall covers 4C Grated Cheese, Homestyle Grated Cheese, and Cento Grated Cheese Brands.

4C says the issue was discovered following a lab test of one cheese at one of the company’s facilities.

The recalled products were distributed nationwide in 6 oz. vacuum-sealed glass jars, with BEST BY dates between Nov. 12, 2016 and Nov. 12, 2018 and packaged in cases of either 6 or 12 jars per case. The following products and codes are affected:

• 4C All Natural Parmesan Grated Cheese (UPC 41387-33126)
• 4C All Natural Parmesan/Romano Grated Cheese (UPC 41387-37126)
• 4C All Natural 100% Imported Italian Pecorino Romano Cheese (UPC 41387-77126)
• 4C HomeStyle All Natural Parmesan Grated Cheese (UPC 41387-32790)
• 4C HomeStyle All Natural Parmesan/Romano Grated Cheese (UPC 41387-11627)
• 4C HomeStyle All Natural 100% Imported Italian
• Pecorino Romano Cheese (UPC 41387-12302)
• Cento Parmesan Grated Cheese (UPC 70796-90502)
• Cento Romano Grated Cheese (UPC 70796-90501)

4C says that while it is recalling the products, it has received no reports of illnesses related to the possible contamination.

Retail stores and distributors have been instructed to immediately remove and discard any of the affected items from their shelves and warehouses.

Customers who have purchased the recalled cheese are urged to not use it and return the product to their local retailer for a full refund.
