Former JCPenney CEO Now Hand-Delivering Phones For AT&T

The last thing you would expect the former CEO of a major department store to do is deliver mobile phones to customers’ homes, but that’s exactly what a new company from former JCPenney CEO Ron Johnson is doing for AT&T.

Johnson’s startup, Enjoy, began testing on-demand delivery of AT&T devices in New York City and San Francisco about a year ago. Now CNN Money reports that Enjoy and AT&T are expanding that partnership to cover Chicago, Los Angeles (and Orange County), Dallas, Houston, Miami, and Atlanta.

Through the service, AT&T customers who purchase eligible phones online can schedule a time to have their new device delivered and set up in as little as four hours from the moment they hit “buy.”

Once the phone arrives, the Enjoy expert will spend at about an hour teaching the new phone owner how to operate their device.

Before Johnson’s brief, disastrous tenure as JCP’s top executive, he’d been Apple’s retail guru — the man behind Apple Stores and their signature Genius Bars.

He tells CNN Money that his new business is a “whole new way to buy and experience the world’s best tech products.”

AT&T and Enjoy’s delivery option is similar to one offered by Sprint.

The carrier launched its in-house Direct 2 You service in April 2015, sending Sprint-trained experts, driving around in Sprint-branded cars, to appointments with customers at the location of their choosing. The experts then move all of the customer’s stuff from one device to another, as well as show them how the new devices work.
