Dunkin’ Donuts customers in Rhode Island and Massachusetts will soon get access to the mobile app experience the chain introduced in Maine and New Hampshire last year, with an expansion of its mobile ordering and payment pilot program for rewards members visiting certain locations.

DD Perks rewards members will be able to order and pay using the Dunkin’ VIP app (only available on iOS right now) starting tomorrow at nine locations in Boston and 19 others in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, reports the Boston Herald.

The expansion comes after Dunkin’ had success with the pilot program it launched last November in the Portland, ME area, which includes some New Hampshire and southern Maine restaurants.

“We’ve been really pleased with what we’re seeing,” Scott Hudler, Dunkin’s vice president of global consumer engagement, told the Herald. “Usage continues to rise. We want to extend it to Boston — our hometown — and get greater and more robust consumer data.”

Customers order on their phones and complete the transaction at the restaurant when they check in, and the payment is charged to their virtual Dunkin’ Donuts card through the app.

Orders can be placed up to 24 hours in advance, as well, with the option to reorder past favorites. Customers then tap “Ready to Pick UP” when it’s go time, and head to the designated store where their order awaits. There’s also an option to retrieve orders from a restaurant’s drive-thru window, where available.

These market tests will help Dunkin’ figure out any kinks with the app and ordering system before a planned national rollout of the mobile features later this year.

“We’re going to learn a lot and make adjustments,” Hudler said. “We will make sure when we’re ready to go that we have fully pressure-tested this product. Once we roll this out nationally, we will have one single app that will have all the functionalities we have today (in the regular Dunkin’ app) plus on-the-go ordering.”
