GM Halts Sale Of Chevy Cruze Over Airbag Concerns; Recall Possible

cruzeredGeneral Motors is once again telling dealers to stop sales of existing inventory of the Chevy Cruze, which has already been the subject of a recall this year over drive shaft issues. This time, the car maker says some 33,000 of these cars could have airbags that were assembled with the wrong part.

The initial stop-sale order from GM to its dealers on Tuesday directed them to put a hold on selling any 2013 or 2014 Cruze vehicles they may have in stock. That order was then adjusted on Wednesday to identify a smaller number — 33,000 — of Cruzes that were likely affected by the problem.

This is just the latest in concerns about airbags supplied by Japanese parts supplier Takata, whose airbags have been tied to recent recalls in millions of vehicles from multiple car companies. Since 2009, Takata airbags have been connected to at least 10 million recalled vehicles in the U.S.

GM has not yet issued a recall for the Cruze — it did recall some Cruzes in 2013 for airbag issues — but the car company is working to repair the 33,000 affected vehicles before it begins selling them again. Detroit News reports that a recall for Cruze vehicles currently on the road could come as early as today.
