World’s Most Expensive Whisky Would Cost You $628K (If Someone Hadn’t Already Bought It)

Thinking about all the things one could buy for $628,205 could make your head spin: A new house! With a room full of cheese, and only cheese! A fleet of adorable cats on scooters! And of course, a plethora of other things. Or if you’re the person who just bought the record-setting most expensive bottle of whisky, well that cool half-million and then some will get you… whisky.

The crystal decanter of Macallan Imperiale “M” sold at Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong, reports CNNMoney, and its price tag is the most expensive ever for a single-malt whisky at auction. So what makes this booze special, sooo special?

It’s Really, Really Rare, and we mean that with definite capital R’s. Most other bottles out there don’t have the size of this one — it’s 28 inches tall and holds six liters of whisky in its faceted crystal depths. And then again, most other bottles of whisky aren’t in crystal decanters.

The person who made the decanter said 40 of the hand-blown glass bottles were made and then destroyed before coming up with the perfect piece, employing 17 craftsmen over 50 hours to finish. There are only four bottles of that particular style as well, so it’s unique, to say the least.

And about the actual liquid inside — it’s got a rare pedigree to match its outer ensemble: The resident whisky maker at the Macallan distillery in Scotland took two years to pick seven casks out of almost 200,000 to blend what would end up being “M.”

The casks that held those choice few whiskeys are rare as well, and made of sherry oak that ranges from 25 to 75 years old.

Here’s where we imagine this whisky sitting in a special case at some rich person’s mansion when the rich person’s teenage kid has a bunch of numskulls over. And then after a few too many light beers the teens end up playing some kind of rowdy catch game and OOPS! There goes the $628,205 whisky, oh nooo! Hijiinks ensue to somehow replace it (or convince scary, rich dad it’s the same bottle) and everyone ends up learning a valuable lesson about themselves.
