Facebook Launches Instagram Videos So You Can Make Moving Selfies Just Like In Days Of Yore

Now with talkies!

Charlie Chaplin. Alfred Hitchcock. Martin Scorsese. What if all those filmmakers could’ve taken 15-second selfie videos and slapped old-timey effects on them? Think of how great they could’ve been! If only they had Facebook’s new video service for Instagram, complete with all those sepia-toned, vintage-looking filters beloved by self-portrait artists flashing duck faces at their phones everywhere.

Facebook’s latest foray into the social media world of images is likely an attempt to compete with Twitter’s bite-sized video service, Vine. The video feature was unveiled to the media today at the company’s headquarters, reports CNET.

Users will soon find a movie camera icon on the app that will enable them to take up to 15 seconds of video, clip by clip. There are 13 new filters specifically for video — so no one will know you shot that blurry club footage in 2013 instead of 1913! — along with various cover frames for display, says Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom said today.

The biggest change is what the company calls “Cinema” — cinematic stabilization that acts as an automatic enhancer.

“Everything we know and love about Instagram, but it moves,” Systrom explained of these newfangled “talkies.”

And, action! Facebook brings video to Instagram [CNET]
