Amazon Cloud Server Problem Spoils Christmas Eve For Some Netflix Users

Many Netflix customers on the East Coast started getting error messages and lengthy load times for streaming videos around dinner time on Christmas Eve.

If you’re reading this instead of using Netflix to stream all those episodes of Sons Of Anarchy you were going to catch up on during the holiday weekend, it’s probably because you’re one of the many Netflix customers who can’t access the service following problems with Amazon-owned cloud servers.

According to Forbes.com, problems with the Amazon AWS system in Virginia made Netflix unavailable to customers, primarily on the East Coast, around 5 p.m. ET on Christmas Eve.

Netflix later confirmed the outage via Twitter, writing, “We’re sorry for the Christmas Eve outage. Terrible timing! Engineers are working on it now.” The company continued to provide updates to customers and answer questions on its @NetflixHelps Twitter account.

The outage did not affect all devices. Here at Consumerist Christmas HQ (which is the normal Consumerist HQ but with a Festivus pole in the middle), Netflix is working okay (though load times are very long) on PC, but is not loading at all on Xbox or iPhone.

And though the Netflix outage is the result of an outage at Amazon, some Consumerist readers point out that Amazon’s streaming service appears to be unaffected.

Here’s hoping that the issue is resolved by morning, as people around the country try to test out Netflix on their new tablets, phones, gaming consoles, laptops and Etch-A-Sketches (maybe not that last one).
