Mr. Coffee Single-Cup Brewers Recalled Because No One Likes A Face Full Of Burning Steam

If there’s a Mrs. Coffee out there, she might be a bit displeased with her husband right about now. Numerous reports of consumers getting hit in the face with steam and scorching coffee grounds have prompted a recall of over 600,000 Mr. Coffee single-cup brewers. She’s never going to let this one drop.

The Los Angeles Times said the offending brewers were sold for $80 a pop at retailers including Bed Bath & Beyond, Target and Walmart, as well as online, in black with silver, red or white trim. So far 59 American customers and two Canadians have reported getting burned in the face, upper body and hands.

The problem arises when the power of the steam building in the water reservoir pops the chamber open and causes the brewer to erupt in hot water and coffee grounds, says the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

All told, 520,000 brewers in the U.S. and 80,700 in Canada are getting pulled. The units were sold from September 2010 through August and were imported from China by Jarden Consumer Solutions.

If you have one of the recalled products (see the CPSC list here), stop using it immediately and contact Jarden for a replacement unit. A list of affected model numbers are available on the agency’s website.
