Parking Lot To Offer Discount To Hybrids & EVs, Charge More For SUVs

It’s one thing for a parking lot to simply offer a discount to people who choose to drive fuel-efficient hybrid and electric vehicles. But does that lot go too far when it charges a premium for people to park their SUVs and Jeeps?

That’s the question being asked of plans for a parking lot in Boston’s Bulfinch Triangle area — only blocks from where the Celtics and Bruins play at the TD Garden.

Electrics and hybrids will benefit from a 10% discount on the $10 hourly rate, while drivers of vehicles that get fewer than 15 mile to the gallon will pay 10% above that rate.

“We feel strongly that not only is this the right thing to do, but that we’ll attract customers who feel the same way,” a rep for the company behind the lot tells the Boston Herald. “A big SUV has a cost both in terms of the environment and in terms of being a heavier vehicle that causes more wear and tear on our lot… We think that should be reflected in our price.”

One driver of a GMC Sierra told the paper that the pricing “is not fair. It’s like they’re trying to make money off of people who are not environmentally conscious.”
