BMW Recalls 1.3 Million Cars Because "Flaming Battery Cable" Is Not A Desired Dealer Upgrade

BMW has announced a worldwide recall of around 1.3 million 5- and 6-Series vehicles built between 2003 and 2010, because of a problem with a battery cable cover that could lead to some unpleasant results.

According to the AP, the problem is that a battery cable covering in the trunk was installed incorrectly. It could cause the electrical system to malfunction, resulting in the engine failing to start and, in rare cases, the potential for fire.

The company says it knows of nine cases where the defect has been found, but isn’t aware of any accidents or injuries related to the recall.

As of right now, it’s unknown how many of the 1.3 million vehicles are on the road in the U.S., but BMW says approximately 290,000 of the recalled cars are in Germany.

The car maker will fix the problem for free at authorized dealers. It says the repair should only take about 30 minutes to complete.
