Discover Brings Back Disposable Account Numbers

Without explanation as to why, Discover card is telling customers that they’re bringing back the disposable account numbers they got rid of at the end of August.

These are single-use credit card numbers attached to your main card. They let you use a number for a transaction and not worry about the credit card number being used again for a subsequent unauthorized purchase because the credit card won’t go through.

At the time, Discover’s email to customers emphasized how all the additional security measures they had added made it so that disposable card numbers weren’t needed.

Several of our commenters noted that this aspect was “one of the more useful features about the card.” Perhaps Discover came to that realization as well.
