Feds Tell California To Shut Down Medical Marijuana Dispensaries Within 45 Days

California’s medical marijuana dispensaries are legal in the state, but in breach of federal law. Now feds are cracking down on businesses that distribute the product, telling them they have 45 days to shut down.

The L.A. Times reports dispensary operators that fail to comply will have their property seized and face criminal charges. According to an internal memo from earlier this year, U.S. attorneys are targeting organizations that handle 200 kilograms or a 1,000 plants a year.

There could be other criteria at play that determine whether feds will target a particular dispensary. A letter sent to a Fairfax, Calif. medical marijuana business says that it has drawn the ire of prosecutors because it’s within 1,000 feet of schools and parks. The Times says letters to San Diego dispensaries didn’t note their locations as being problems.
