ESPN No Longer "Ready For Some Football"

In the aftermath of a politically-tinged controversy, the days in which Hank Williams Jr. introduces Monday Night Football games with “Are you ready for some football?” theme songs have come to an end. Depending on who you believe, Williams either quit or was fired. Maybe both happened. But in any case, fans who are sick of the tired jingle came out ahead.

The music died after Williams compared President Barack Obama to Hitler on a Fox News Channel Show. ESPN pulled the Williams intro from Monday’s game, and Thursday both sides announced they were done with one another. Sports Illustrated rounds up the dueling statements.

From Williams:

“After reading hundreds of e-mails, I have made MY decision. By pulling my opening Oct 3rd, You (ESPN) stepped on the Toes of The First Amendment Freedom of Speech, so therefore Me, My Song, and All My Rowdy Friends are OUT OF HERE. It’s been a great run.”

And now from ESPN:

“We have decided to part ways with Hank Williams, Jr. We appreciate his contributions over the past years. The success of Monday Night Football has always been about the games and that will continue.”

Now here’s hoping that Faith Hill says something inappropriate so we can be spared the ear-numbing Sunday Night Football song that goes “I’ve been waiting all day for Sunday night.”
