Microsoft Apologizes To Those Mistakenly Banned From Xbox Live

A security snafu banned an unconfirmed number of users from Xbox Live. Now Microsoft has admitted to the mistake and issued an apology to those affected. The Xbox cops have revoked the ban and credited the innocent with three free month of Xbox Live and $20 worth of Microsoft Points.

On a guest post on the Major Nelson blog, an Xbox 360 security representative says the false bans came from a software glitch that was in effect from Aug. 29 to Sept. 9 that incorrectly identified consoles as having been modified.

The post says Microsoft has fixed the error and is reviewing its system to make sure it doesn’t occur again. Those who were affected don’t need to do anything.

From the post:

Since we know exactly who is affected, those customers do not need to take any action. Everything will be applied automatically. No keys or tokens to redeem, no other action to be taken.
