OnStar Now Tracking Your Car Even After You Cancel Service

OnStar sent around an email to users this week letting them know they’ll be keeping close tabs on their cars, even if they cancel the service. The navigation-and-emergency service will keep tracking your car, and the company is reserving the right to anonymously resell the collected data to third parties.

Update: This plan was never actually implemented, and OnStar scrapped it after the public didn’t much care for the idea.

“What’s changed [is that if] you want to cancel your OnStar service, we are going to maintain a two-way connection to your vehicle unless the customer says otherwise,” a spokesperson told WIRED.

If you consider this an invasion of your privacy and/or are paranoid, you can completely disable the OnStar system after you cancel service by checking your user manual for the location of the OnStar fuse. Pull the fuse and it’s just like putting a tin foil hat over your car.
