For At-Risk Women, MRIs May Be Better Than Mammograms

Mammograms have long been standard breast cancer detection tools, but researchers say magnetic resonance imaging may be more effective at finding tumors in women who are more at risk of contracting cancer and are medically underserved.

UPI reports a Duke University-led research study that pitted mammograms against MRIs in tumor detection with equal sample sizes and found that MRIs detected nine breast cancer cases, while mammograms spotted only one cancerous case.

The lead researcher said that even though MRIs tend to be more expensive than mammograms, they are still more cost-effective due to their accuracy. She says “If you truly target high-risk women with MRIs, you can find the cancers, and you can find them early.”
