Report: GameStop To Get Into The Tablet Business Next Year

Tablet computers can be many things to many different consumers: An easy way to surf the Web, a portable digital-video player, a color e-book reader, or maybe a lightweight, laptop stand-in. But would you buy a tablet just to play video games? And would you buy one from perennial Worst Company In America contestant GameStop?

The video game retailer has reportedly been toying with the idea of selling its own branded tablet computer specifically geared toward mobile and online games–areas that the brick-and-mortar chain has been trying to dive into more deeply.

Yesterday, GamesIndustry.biz, a trade website, revealed that GameStop has taken a step closer by choosing Google’s Android operating system as the basis for its gaming tablet, which will be built by an undisclosed computer manufacturer.

Tony Bartel, President of GameStop, didn’t reveal specific details of the GameStop-branded tablet to the trade publication. But he did confirm that the company has been testing units with consumers in Dallas for the past two weeks. And unlike other Android tablets, GameStop’s portable unit will feature a dedicated gaming controller, in part because, “It’s hard to imagine how to stream a game–let’s say Modern Warfare 3–onto a tablet and then play it with your finger,” Bartel said.

According to GamesIndustry.Biz, Bartel plans to have the GameStop tablet (with a number of game titles preinstalled) in its stores by next year. Pricing was not disclosed.
