54,000 Clip-On Chairs Recalled For Failing To Clip On To Table Tops

The Consumer Product Safety Commission and phil&teds USA Inc, of Fort Collins, Co. announced the recall of the company’s metoo Clip-on Chair. The baby seats, designed to attach to table tops, have clamp parts that may fail. Children seated in the chair may fall or possibly have their fingers crushed or amputated by the failing mechanism.

The company has received 19 reports of the table-top chairs failing with a variety of table surfaces. Included in the customer reports were five reports of injuries, one of which involved “permanent finger injury” to a child under 18-months old.

The phil&ted chairs have a nylon fabric seat and a metal frame that clamps onto tables using two metal vise clamps. The upper part of each clamp rests on the table top and has either a rubber pad on its underside or a rubber boot covering the clamp. The chairs, which were also subject to a CPSC safety alert in May, can fail if the rubber parts are worn or missing.

The recalled chairs were sold in three fabric colors–red, black and navy–and do not have black plastic spacers between the cross bar and the clamps. (See image below.) Buy Buy Baby, Target, Toys R Us (and their online sites) as well as philandteds.com; Amazon.com and other online retailers sold the chairs from May 2006 to May 2011 for about $40 to $50.

The CPSC warns consumers should immediately stop using the chair and contact phil&ted (toll-free: 855-652-9019, http://www.philandteds.com/support) to receive a free repair kit and revised user instructions. Consumers who previously received a repair kit with only rubber boots should also stop using the chair and contact the company for the new repair kit.
