Facebook App To Automatically Match College Students With Financial Aid

MTV and The College Board recently teamed up for something called the College Affordability Challenge, a contest to create digital tools that will help to make navigating the financial aid maze even slightly easier. Earlier this week, they announced the winner, a Facebook application that takes users’ info and matches them up with the most appropriate aid providers.

The app, created by a recent UNLV graduate, is expected to hit Facebook in the fall. According to a statement it will “automatically present a tailored list of relevant financial aid opportunities” and “will provide step-by-step tutorials on important processes like filling out the FAFSA form and deciding how much debt to take on.”

The College Board says that nearly 2/3 of students have difficulty applying for financial aid, while the American Council on Education claims that upwards of two million college students don’t apply for any of the nearly $70 billion in financial aid the government distributes each year.

“Navigating the financial aid process can be incredibly challenging — we need a way to make it easier for students,” said Devin Valencia, creator of the winning application.
