Shopping Helps Keep Old People Alive Longer: Study

Regular shopping trips could actually extend the lives of older people, a new study finds. Those who shopped every day were 27% not as apt to die within 10 years as people who shopped only once a week.

“Shopping captures several dimensions of personal wellbeing, health and security as well as contributing to the community’s cohesiveness and economy, and may represent or actually confer increased longevity,” wrote the researchers.

The study did not report on whether the same benefits could be achieved by regular daily exercise, socializing, and problem-solving that could be obtained for free.
