Warner Bros. Starts Renting Movies Through Facebook

It was bound to happen eventually. Earlier today, Warner Bros. launched a new program on Facebook that will let users rent streaming movies directly through the social networking site.

First up for the partnership is a little indie film you may have heard of that played in a few theaters a couple years back: The Dark Knight.

From ABC News:

Starting Tuesday, people who clicked “like” on the Facebook page of “The Dark Night” will be able to click a “rent” icon and pay 30 Facebook credits, or $3, to watch the movie.

The offering is only available to people in the U.S. Warner Bros says it will add other movies in coming months. Renters will have access to the movies for 48 hours. Warner Bros. didn’t say how much it will cost to buy movies.

“Facebook has become a daily destination for hundreds of millions of people,” said Thomas Gewecke, president of Warner Bros. Digital Distribution. “Making our films available through Facebook is a natural extension of our digital distribution efforts. It gives consumers a simple, convenient way to access and enjoy our films through the world’s largest social network.”
