Craigslist Isn't Giving Away $1000 Apple Gift Cards, Either

We’ve already established that Craigslist isn’t giving away free iPads to randomly selected people who post ads. But the weird scam just keeps going. Uyen first received the “Free iPad” e-mail after posting an ad on Craigslist, but realized that it was clearly too good to be true, did some research, and found Consumerist. Yay! Then someone–no one is quite sure who–sent a follow-up e-mail with a different, but inexplicably more lucrative deal. Sorry, kids, but cynical Uyen is right: this one’s too good to be true, too.

Here’s the message being sent tout:

We ran out of free iPads to give away. To make up for it we would like to give you a $1000 Apple store gift card. You can use this gift card to buy any Apple product through Apple’s website or at any of their stores. Gift card can be used to purchase an iPad, an iPhone, an iPod, a Mac or a MacBook. Gift card can also be used on iTunes. Please visit our gift card sign up page here and just follow the directions. We will send you the gift card within 2-3 business days. Once again sorry for this inconvenience. We hope the Apple gift card makes up for the mistake on our end.

Thank you for understanding,

Jenny Simons

The “gift card signup,” of course, takes you to a site where you must complete a set number of referral offers, make purchases, and refer other people to the program in order to receive your “free” item. It might work, but may also end up costing you more than $1,000. If you want an iPod, just go buy one.
