DOT: No Evidence Of Electronics Error In Toyota Acceleration Cases

The Dept. of Transportation has completed its investigation into the causes of sudden unintended acceleration in some Toyota vehicles and found no evidence that an electronic glitch could be responsible.

“There is no electronic-based cause for unintended high-speed acceleration in Toyotas,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement on Tuesday.

The investigation agreed with Toyota’s own findings that there are two apparent causes of the acceleration: “sticky” accelerator pedals and floor mats that can come loose and cause the accelerator to become trapped.

In the wake of last year’s massive Toyota recalls, some believed that a problem with the car’s electronic throttle was at least partially responsible for some cases of unintended acceleration.
