  1. Me - now with more humidity says:

    Cute doggeh!!!

    • Dustbunny says:

      Awww…yeah. Cutie-pie.

And speaking of dogs, I stopped to pet a mini-dachshund in my neighborhood yesterday when he suddenly started barking & yapping at me like crazy. WTH is it with little dogs & their yappiness?? His human said he has “small dog syndrome”. Why are big dogs generally more laid back?

      • catastrophegirl chooses not to fly says:

i suspect small dog syndrome is the same as napoleon syndrome for humans

        • Me - now with more humidity says:

          …and little dogs can’t drive Corvettes 8-)

        • Dustbunny says:

LOL, you’re probably right. It was bizarre — one minute he’s licking my hand like we’re BFFs and the next he’s yapping at me like crazy. At least I know to avoid him and the nasty chihuahua down the street from now on.

      • cash_da_pibble says:

I always figured that our tiny dogs are bred to be good for SOMETHING, right? And Most Small dogs are bred to be vermin-killers. Dachshunds are particularly tenacious since they were meant to root out Badgers from their underground hidey-holes.

So you got this huge tenacity bottled up in this tiny dog that is most likely not being used in the way it was bred to be used. I imagine he’s gonna be a little uppity. :)

      • mac-phisto says:

you should always be careful when attempting to pet any dog – large or small. first, you should ask the owner if it’s ok to pet the animal. then, bend down, hold out your hand & let the dog come to you.

never reach into a car to pet a dog or approach one from behind – they can easily mistake your friendly gesture for a threat.

        • Dustbunny says:

He approached me first, all friendly & wagging his tail! But now that I think about it, I probably had cat hair all over my sweater. Maybe that’s what set him off. It’s the kitteh’s fault.

          • mac-phisto says:

that explains a lot – he probably thought he hit the kitteh motherload. ITSA GODZILLA KITTEH – ATTACK!

      • theycallmeGinger says:

I’ve noticed this with dogs and horses (and some humans). The little ones are spastic brats, while draft horses are known as “gentle giants.”

  2. GuyGuidoEyesSteveDaveâ„¢ says:

Well, I think I’m going to take the plunge and buy an ultrasonic cleaner to help me clean all my vintage Zippo lighters and old razors. I see a nice one at Harbor Freight, and happen to have the coupon, so on my way to the Dr.’s today, I will stop and grab one. Anyone have any tips?

    • phil says:

Sorry, no tips. But you’ve got an awesome Zippo collection. Vintage lighters have a presence that disposable butane never will. And I say this as someone whose only lighters live in my toolbox, for heat-shrink tubing duty.

I’d experiment a bit with an ultrasonic cleaner first, using something that wouldn’t annoy you if it was damaged…

  3. SonarTech52 says:

Im glad it’s Friday!! And the weather down here is finally easing up!! No more 100 degree weather whew… I think Ill work on the yard and wash the cars this weekend, and play some MW2..

Anyone have anything cool they are doing this weekend? Ive thought about taking the family to a national park or something, just dont know what…

    • HogwartsProfessor says:

No, just cleaning. :P Bf and I might watch something over Netflix. We press play at the same time and talk over messaging while watching. It’s not quite the same as being together, but it’s better than nothing!

I have to make a decision about painting the inside of my house. I’ve put it off far too long. The kitchen is FUUUUUUGLY.

      • SonarTech52 says:

Yeah that is still kinda cool, almost like being at the same place.

Are you deciding on color or when to paint? My wife used some online paint matching where you can see two rooms, to see how colors will flow etc.. kinda cool. Might have been or She picked some colors in the same family and using lighter colors on certain walls gives a cool look.

        • HogwartsProfessor says:

Yes, but it still sucks. I wish we could be in the same place. :(

I need to paint soon, before it gets too cold and I have to shut the windows. The kitchen is this horrible sea green from the Fifties (the house was built in 1952 and never redecorated, LOL) and the cabinet doors look like plywood. I was thinking cream walls for light because it’s a southern exposure, and sage green cabinets. The floor is fugly too but I can’t afford to fix that right now. I also want to do all the woodwork (except the doors) white.

The north bedroom, my room, was that same green color when I moved in. I painted it lilac. That’s the only room I’ve done. I think I’ll do one room at a time and then do the woodwork. All the rooms have green decor in them somehow. I’ll use colors that blend with it. I might do the living room cream also since you can see into the kitchen from it, and it’s north and kinda dark.

*sigh* It’s the prep work I don’t wanna do. I like the painting part.

Have you had any luck with Skype? My fellow consumerist-friends Subtlefrog and MostlyHarmless all watched something together on Netflix while we were connected via skype. It was pretty fun, we made snarky comments and made eachother laugh (it was the first episode of Firefly).

        • HogwartsProfessor says:

Ha ha ha ha! That sounds fun! We don’t do Skype for movie-watching because it hogs so much memory; along with the streaming, my poor little laptop would probably asplode. We have used it just to video chat, where we can actually see each other. We just do MSN Messenger when we are talking, mostly. And of course, we call each other.

I’m using Skpe or my prepaid cell for all my long-distance calls now, since I don’t dare lose the landline for AT&T naked DSL. Too many horror stories of them messing that up. Skype is cheaper.

The best part was a few weeks ago when he was moving. He changed his route and came through here and surprised me at work. When he came through the door, I thought I was imagining it. It was like “Oh, that’s somebody who looks like BF; it’s not him—ZOMG!!!”

    • cash_da_pibble says:

I’m going to the Nor Cal Ren Faire with some friends tomorrow!
I don’t think we will be dressing up, but there’s always a chance with the rent-a-fit booth!
I am also looking forward to lots of tasty brew and art, and to restock my bead collection.

    • Rectilinear Propagation says:

The weather is finally cooled off here too.

Unfortunately, this means that I’ve been cold constantly for the past two days. Everyone’s A/C is still operating as if it’s hot as Hell outside and I have to step outside for relief instead of the other way around.

  4. momtimestwo says:

I just had a positive test for strep. Went to the Little Clinic (in Krogers), so if anyone wants some strep let me know!

I haven’t seen a hummingbird in 2 days, but I’m going to keep the feeders up for a few more weeks for any late migraters.

I can’t think of anything else to babble on about. Have a great weekend!

    • HogwartsProfessor says:

You too. Hope you feel better. Strep sucks!

      • axhandler1 says:

Indeed it does. One time in college I had it so bad that they ended up giving me morphine for the pain. Which actually turned out to be really fun. But up until that point, it was terrible.

  5. qbubbles says:

OMG get this kid OUT of me!

I’m now officially overdue. 40 weeks and 2 effing days. I’m scheduled for an induction next Friday. One more week until I can meet my daughter.

  6. Rectilinear Propagation says:

Feeling cranky: The health center scheduled my appointment half an hour earlier than what they told me it would be on the phone. I’m irritated with them for telling me I must have “misunderstood” and I’m irritated with myself for forgetting that they always do that. I normally schedule it online because I can see all the open spots and there isn’t a “misunderstanding” about the time. I only called because my pharmacist said they needed to talk to me and I thought it might have been about something other than just being out of refills.

Now I’ll probably run out before I can get back over there and that’s always *fun*.

  7. Murph1908 says:

You know, somewhere out there, there’s a marketing person cheering about winning our worst ad vote. In their sick mind, it was a success since we’re talking about it and it’s memorable.

  8. wonderkitty now has two dogs says:

Due to how things can happen when you marry into the military and want to actually be together, I’ve spent the first 6 months of my married life in various one-rooms. As a newlywed. Let me say this clearly: I do NOT suggest spending this much time in one room with ANYONE. We finally move into a town home next weekend. Dear God. Thank you.

Also, can we redo the WAIA? I am effing SICK of the “cardi cocktails” Old Navy commercial. It’s played all the time at night up here. I like the Weeble Wobble commercial, though. It’s catchy, like a real song.

    • Murph1908 says:

I know. The WAIA should be a quarterly thing. I already have a new most hated ad that gets an insta-mute when it comes on.

The Burger King commercials with the idiots singing to wartime marches need to end NOW.

When it comes on the radio, I change the station and don’t come back. You would think radio stations would want to avoid such reactions.

  9. Eyebrows McGee (now with double the baby!) says:

Mini McGee is still “reading” his Consumer Reports to pieces (because it is FULL OF CARS). He is 16 months old and his primary interest is trucks, trucks, trucks. We are eagerly awaiting the next all-cars edition because I’m not sure how much longer last year’s will hold up. He’s my little Consumerist baby!

  10. theblackdog says:

    Busy weekend here.

Blessing of the Animals service tomorrow morning at church. I volunteered to help handle one of my friends dogs, a cute Irish Lurcher named “Puddin'”

In the afternoon, a wedding celebration and reception. I’ll be reading one of the psalms.

For nighttime fun, going to a shrimp, oyster, and bull roast as a fundraiser for charity, and also to schmooze with a bunch of sports fans!

Sunday, church, and then Ravens vs Steelers football! It’s going to be a good game. GO RAVENS!

  11. outshined says:

Vegas! Tough week. 111 degrees in LA, power failure at house 2 days, massive grocery loss, work nonsense.

Vodka + Hard Rock + Pool.

  12. pecan 3.14159265 says:

Swamped at work, and I have barely any time to breathe or do anything else. I also feel kind of queasy but I suspect that’s because I drank a lot of coffee really quickly. I have a stomachache and I have a mountain of work to do. This is the first time I’ve done anything other than work all day!

  13. pecan 3.14159265 says:

Having some technical difficulties here, I think. It won’t update to the newest set of posts.

  14. Kimaroo - 100% Pure Natural Kitteh says:

WOOOOOOOOOOOOO.. I’m glad this week is OVER.

Yesterday sucked.. I went to the Social Security office to see if I qualified for any aid for either health insurance (medicare or whatever) or some funds so I could pay for the care I require (and mainly my stupidly expensive driving evaluation) and I make too much money to qualify. Apparently you cannot make more than 1000 dollars, before taxes, per month. So, if I quit my job and went on Disability for 2 years, then I’d qualify for medicare as well.

I’m not going to quit my job. Even though everyone seems to think that would be a whole lot easier. I would just feel like crap about it.

So yeah… so over this week.. totally.

Stay tuned to next week’s open thread to find out how my driving evaluation goes.. it’s scheduled for Thursday.

    • catastrophegirl chooses not to fly says:

damn, i remember when we talked about that and how you weren’t sure about your marriage status would affect it. sorry to hear it’s completely other red tape that’s in the way.
i have a friend who wants to work part time because it helps him keep his head on straight but if he works he doesn’t qualify for his mental health medications. either way he ends up not quite as mentally healthy as he could be because of stupid red tape. [he volunteers a lot to get out and interact with people which is what his doc says helps him most]
it’s like they WANT to pay people to be non productive members of society

      • Kimaroo - 100% Pure Natural Kitteh says:

Yeah, we didn’t even get that far. It’s so dumb.

I feel bad for your friend as well.. but at least he’s found the volunteering.. hopefully that helps a little. I am really getting that impression.. about them wanting to pay people to sit around and do nothing.. The state program to help disabled people drive is the same way.. I’d only qualify for that if I either didn’t have a job or was in danger of losing my job if I don’t drive. My boss thought about “threatening my job” to get me into that program but I told her I didn’t want her to stick her neck out for me in case the state started investigating my claims or something.

        • GuyGuidoEyesSteveDaveâ„¢ says:

Can you ask for a reduction in pay?

          • Kimaroo - 100% Pure Natural Kitteh says:

It wouldn’t help.. they reduce the benefits you get based on money you make.. so I’d come out about the same or lower.

    • HogwartsProfessor says:

I have both my fingers and toes crossed that it goes well for you. :)

      • Kimaroo - 100% Pure Natural Kitteh says:

Thanks, I hope it does. I’m sure that I can do everything no problem.. I just hope it doesn’t take forever so that I can pay the least amount possible.

  15. SonarTech52 says:

New Apple TV is already jailbroken… rofl..

  16. pop top says:

I have a busy month coming up; GWAR concert, RIfftrax Live (yes Kimaroo, you should go this time), friends’ getting married, funeral, two birthdays and Trail Park Boys live. It’s going to be a lot of fun!

  17. catastrophegirl chooses not to fly says:

stumped on my monster making. i have skeletal frame parts but can’t decide on the ‘skin’
thinking a combo of fabrics and leathers. it’s only a head/neck, arm and wing which will be shown in shadow, firelight and no close ups so the viewer gets to use a lot of their own imagination to decide what the beast actually is.
maybe this weekend i can get outside since it’s no longer hot and find some sticks and leaves and things to work into the design.
fortunately the director hasn’t been able to reschedule shooting the battle sequence so i don’t have to be ready right now.

  18. 333 (only half evil) says:

Internet went out early Thursday morning. Called and was told it would be back by 6:30 Friday morning. Called again today and now told it will be out until Monday! They are experiencing a network outage in our area. I hate that BellSouth was bought by AT&T.

  19. ArcanaJ says:

Not certain yet, but all signs indicate that I lost out on another potential job. *sigh*

  20. Clyde Barrow says:

I love the look on this dog’s face.

  21. JulesNoctambule says:

We’re thinking of buying a bed from IKEA, since most of the furniture stores and Craigslist seem to only have three options: ugly, pricey, or both. Anyone have any opinions or experiences either way?

    • catastrophegirl chooses not to fly says:

frame only or mattress also? i’ve heard mixed review on their mattresses.
i learn more about individual pieces of ikea furniture from the people who dismantle it and make it into other things.
maybe you can find a hack using the bed you are interested in.

      • JulesNoctambule says:

Frame only, and honestly I want to put in as little effort as is humanly possible. I can make my own bed if I really want to, so if I’m going to mod something I may as well make the whole thing myself.

        • catastrophegirl chooses not to fly says:

you should come out saturday to see what bedframes we have at the yard sale, the info is on the right hand side of the page

i know of a couple of things and one headboard that the donator suspects may be mahogany. i have no idea if it actually is though
