Comcast Offers Free 3D Movies On Demand

One problem with owning a 3DTV is that there’s not much to watch through your ludicrously expensive glasses. Comcast is offering a slate of obscure films you can use to show off your technology to visiting friends, provided you keep extra sets of those glasses handy.

High-def Digest reports you access the slate of 3D films by clicking the “free movies” section under the On Demand banner, where you can scrolled through such cinematic masterpieces as Haunted Castle, African Adventure and Alien Adventure.

Yeah, I’ve never heard of them either. But they are in 3D and they are free, and you know what they say about beggars choosing their gift horses in the mouths. Or something.

But are these new 3D movies or the old red/blue type that wouldnt work with modern glasses.

Do the 3D glasses we get at the movies work for these or are these entirely new glasses? I’m afraid I haven’t kept up on my 3D technology…

3D glasses you get from the movies will not work. The current crop of 3D TVs uses active shutter glasses which are more complex than the passive glasses that movie theaters use. It has to do with the different was a theater and a TV create the 3D effect.

There are passive glasses TVs and projectors in the works for the home, but the cost of the active shutter glasses is offset by an increase in the cost of the display.
Of course you can add extra glasses to a passive, polarized glasses setup for a lot less.

Is it even possible to do 3D on a television with the current polarized system they’re using in theaters now? I’ve seen some that use the old red/blue system and the effect was marginal but still visible.

They are working on it supposedly. They are also working on a 3D TV that doesn’t use glasses. Toshiba may be releasing one by year’s end…

I’ve been TV shopping lately, haha.
