Phil needs to revisit the concept video game purchases and returns. His stance was torn to ribbons over at reddit.

    • nrich239 says:

He was torn to shreds but one major point they harped on was when Phil ended the conversation when he realized it wouldn’t be going anywhere.

    • Smashville says:

I will say I actually did laugh out loud when I read this exchange, though…

I think The Consumerist has gone heavily in this direction over the past year or so. This may be too huge of a deal to post here, but I’m even considering deleting The Consumerist from my Chrome bookmarks.

      Chrome bookmarks at that.

      Oh bitches, that shit synchs!

  2. dragonfire81 says:

Informal poll here; How many of you read past the first page of comments on a consumerist post? I generally don’t unless I am really interested in the topic. I am sure I am missing out on some great comments and sarcasm but I just don’t often feel motivated to go past the first page.

    • NarcolepticGirl says:

Oh, I read all of them.
The comments are what makes this site, in my opinion.
There are some funny and intelligent people that comment here.

    • tkmluv says:

I very rarely read past the first page. If I do, it is usually because I have something to say and I want to make sure it wasn’t said already.

    • Rectilinear Propagation says:

There have to be several pages of comments before I skip any…and I usually end up going back and reading them anyway.

The thing with the comments pages is that past page 2 they’re usually half of the comments of the previous page. So the top of page 3 will be some of page 2 before you get to the new comments.

    • It'sRexManningDay! says:

I rarely read past the first page, sorry to say.

    • catastrophegirl chooses not to fly says:

i read past the first page but sometimes it takes me all day since i’m reading on breaks and lunches at work

    • GuyGuidoEyesSteveDaveâ„¢ says:

They really need a “view all comments” option. Also, with the weird glitch that once 50 comments is hit, it starts a 2nd page even if there are only 10 comments with 40 nested replies.

Also, am I the only one who hates that everytime you reply or make a comment, you have to wait for the page to reload, and then re-expand to answer another comment?

      • NarcolepticGirl says:

Yes. It’s better than the last year or so… but it’s still the slowest comment system I’ve encountered. maybe it’s because I have no patience. I always have mutliple tabs open so I can read the next article while the comment is “processing”.

      • HogwartsProfessor says:

        Oh God, I HATE THAT.

I do read beyond on most of them, unless it’s a show-your-receipt thread. :P

      • Brunette Bookworm says:

I hate that! I also wish they had a notification is someone replied to your comment. Gawker started doing that and it’s a really great feature. Sometimes I wish they still used the Gawker comment system.

        • Kimaroo - 100% Pure Natural Kitteh says:

Yes, I REALLY miss comment notifications. And the comment history here is so short that it’s pretty much worthless. It really cuts out all of the conversations I used to have via comments. Sad, so sad.

          • catastrophegirl chooses not to fly says:

agreed. if there’s say …30 posts in a day… if you comment on half of them, you can’t easily go check for replies unless you wrote down which ones you commented on. for people like me who have terrible memories it’s pretty much a given that i’ll miss checking on most of mine to see if anyone replied

          • GuyGuidoEyesSteveDaveâ„¢ says:

Try clicking on “actions” in your profile page.

        • Fidget says:

Yes! I ride in on my red badger of courage, then spend an ungodly amount of time waiting on someone to come yell at me.

      • tkmluv says:

Yes, I wish I could set it to default to expand all comments.

  3. pecan 3.14159265 says:

That cat made me laugh out loud! I’m sure people think I’m nuts.

My favorite topic for open thread: Lunch. I haven’t eaten yet (this thread is coming awfully early today!), have you? What are you guys eating for lunch?

Any July 4th plans? I’m going to what I hope will be a fun barbecue, but what I know in my heart will be a clusterfracas of extreme heat (we’re hitting 98 this Sunday), small spaces, and awkward silences.

    • Rectilinear Propagation says:

I haven’t eaten yet and have no ideas. I wish I’d packed a lunch quite frankly.

I’ve always wanted to go completely nuts and actually have steak for lunch but I don’t think I’ll have the time…at least not today.

    • Kimaroo - 100% Pure Natural Kitteh says:

I’m not eating lunch at work today.. I forgot to bring anything. Allthough I do have a honey bun stashed in my work bag……….. Nah… I just can’t eat that lousy in front of my boss. : /

    • GuyGuidoEyesSteveDaveâ„¢ says:

I had leftover Sausage and rice. I love my rice cooker. The only thing I didn’t add was pepper jack cheeze.

      • HogwartsProfessor says:

I want one really bad. An Indian friend of mine recommended I get one since I’m exploring that cuisine. He said you can cook all kinds of things in it.

        • GuyGuidoEyesSteveDaveâ„¢ says:

Mine was a present, and you can. I cook the sausage and the rice together. I usually cut the sausage and put it in froze and let it cook for like 5 minutes, then turn it off, add the rice and water, and hit cook again. When it beeps done, I toss in some cheese I cut, close the lid while it’s in the “keep warm” mode, and it melts within 1-2 minutes.

I can also throw in the “steam rack” and put some sliced pork or beef or chicken, and the steam cooks it and also drips some yummy fat into the rice. When done, I throw the meat into the rice underneath and mix. I have also just thrown in beans from a can, some rice and water, and hit cook.

        • Kimaroo - 100% Pure Natural Kitteh says:

I have a Rice Cooker (this one! and I love it more than I probably even should. It makes rice, sure, but… it.. also.. makes.. CAKE! Seriously! The most delicious and moist cake ever. I love it. And in Texas, it’s so handy not to have to heat up the whole kitchen when you want cake.

…Now I want cake. Is there a such thing as 4th of July cake? THERE IS NOW! HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA!

        • catastrophegirl chooses not to fly says:

i got an old rice cooker years ago that my mom’s neighbor was throwing out in favor of a new fancy model that “does more”
so she can steam her veggies in it by pushing a button that says veggies.
i can steam veggies in her old one by pushing the same button used for rice. i just have to remember to set the kitchen timer manually.
          mine however doesn’t make cake.

    • HogwartsProfessor says:

I didn’t bring anything, and I didn’t bring my ‘puter (usually I write at lunch and stuff my face with whatever leftovers I bring from home). I did bring a book, and today Imma going to go to the big truck stop Kum N Go and get some little chicken tenders and potato wedges. Yumma Yumma!!!!

Bad, I know; but hey. It’s FRIDAY. Also I need to get the hell out of here for a bit!!!!!

    • Fidget says:

Boyfriend and I made, entirely from scratch, spinach alfredo pizza last night. So I’m eating that. And then probably making more of it.
And the cat is indeed absolutely pawsome.

  4. dragonfire81 says:

My job search is progressing more slowly than I thought it would, I have had a couple of interviews but no offers. The market is beyond competitive not only is the market tight but its tough for me to beat out someone with a masters or MBA for a $10/hour office job.

    • catastrophegirl chooses not to fly says:

hopefully you have some saving to get by on. i’ve got a friend getting her foot in the door on a museum job by volunteering at the museum where she wants to work. of course, someone’s going to have to die before there’s a job opening…

    • Looseneck says:

I just got a full-time job starting July 12th after being on unemployment for 16 months. All the jobs I found paid $10/hr and required a BA (which I don’t have).

I am soooo glad I didn’t get any of those jobs. My new position starts at $18/hr and I still can’t believe I’m finally employed!

  5. mac-phisto says:

    woohoo! holiday weekend!

heading down to astoria tomorrow to watch the matches at the bohemian hall & beer garden. LOVE THAT PLACE!

maybe i’ll see some of you there – i’ll be the one with a pint in my hand. :)

  6. ExtraCelestial says:

So I need to head south on 95 tomorrow and I’m thinking about leaving mid-morning. Am I screwed? What’s the best time to travel on a holiday weekend to avoid traffic? I feel like most people travel super early. Discuss!

    • Oranges w/ Cheese says:

Depends a whole bunch where on 95 you are.

    • pecan 3.14159265 says:

Yeah, like Oranges said, tell us what part of 95 South you are…I think that 95 South in the DC area is going to be shut down to one lane. You’re going to have a hell of a time there if you’re passing through the DC area.

    • catastrophegirl chooses not to fly says:

if you pass through NC on the way, the other highways have some construction going on which is rerouting a bit of traffic to 95. and both county and state are patrolling the highways in great numbers already and really enforcing the “move over law” as part of that.
as in if you pass a cop who has someone pulled over on the shoulder and don’t change lanes so you don’t pass right next to them, the next cop down the line will pull you over and ticket you for not changing lanes.
i saw a couple of those on the way to work this morning already

    • NarcolepticGirl says:

I’ve traveled 95 about a dozen times from Florida to Boston. The only traffic I hit in all those times was in New York and D.C.
I have left at many different times, but usually I would leave in the middle of the night and make sure I’ll hit a more rural area around 7:30 – 9:30am

    • ExtraCelestial says:

Oh duh!! Sorry I was being super dense. I’m actually going south through VA (starting in MD, dealing with 495-blurg!). :o( I believe my exit is before Fredericksburg though.

One lane? Why oh why would they that this weekend??

      • pecan 3.14159265 says:

I think it’s road work – the HOV lanes will be open for all traffic (no HOV restrictions) but all of the road signs and equipment that have been there will have to stay.

  8. catastrophegirl chooses not to fly says:

anyone want to help kitties and maybe win a prize? the cat rescue has huge loads of unexpected medical bills this year so we’re having a raffle

  9. Smashville says:

Hmm…is this the weekend I make the move on my ex-girlfriend/best friend…it’s been 3 years since I’ve even kissed her…hmm.

Also, more importantly, working out my finest prank. A bunch of us are going to see twilight. And then when the opening credits roll…we’re going to bust out vuvuzuelas.

    • catastrophegirl chooses not to fly says:

      good luck with both endeavors

      • Smashville says:

The vuvuzuelas has to be more strategic. We have to find a showing after curfew (because regardless of the crappiness of Twilight, we don’t want to ruin some little kid’s movie) in a theater that we’re fairly certain we will NEVER frequent again.

        • hotdogsunrise says:

Please record it put it on the internet so I can watch this and laugh hysterically.

        • Fidget says:

Amazing. Please do post video. If you can stand to watch that far, why not wait and vuvuzela something really important? Like whatever the “say it, say vampire” equivalent for this movie is.

    • Rectilinear Propagation says:

You might not get out of that theater alive.

  10. Smashville says:

Also, what’s up with the recent rise of the censor/pc-police in the threads?

It seems like any time someone busts out a “shit” or a “fuck”, there’s someone there to try to shame them with a “THINK OF THE CHILDREN!” type response.

    • mac-phisto says:

like the pedantic responses, i always just dismiss those. what’s the big deal – it’s the internet. you can’t visit the NYT without seeing those words, why should consumerist be any different?

    • NarcolepticGirl says:

Oh man, I’m barely surviving here in Tennessee with my mouth.
I think I’ve offended everyone at work with even a simple “what the hell”.

      • Smashville says:

Yeah. We hired a girl and someone came up here and was like, That’s the girl that said “fuck” the other day.

So now I’m friends with the girl that says “fuck”.

      • GuyGuidoEyesSteveDaveâ„¢ says:

I’m reminded of when Bart had dinner at the Lovejoy’s, and he kept saying, “but, but, but…”

    • Fidget says:

I’ve missed those. Probably been drawing some with that nasty, worthless Osi person. But really, I love people who say things with swearing have “too much language for my precious kids.” Hilarious. It wouldn’t be an issue if your kid didn’t already know the word. Might as well learn ’em proper usage.

  11. Kimaroo - 100% Pure Natural Kitteh says:

That kitteh picture seriously made me Lol. And Laura, when I saw the picture of the cat modeling a thong, I knew it was you who found that. I appreciate your cat picture searching prowess.

This week has been rather low-key so far.. and we don’t have any plans for the long weekend. Next weekend however, we’re taking a 3 day trip to my grandma’s house. How quaint!

I saw Toy Story 3.. I really liked it and thought it was better than 2 (which I also really liked.) but I don’t understand why people keep bashing it and saying that it’s too sad.

    To pecan3.14. Love, Bastien

    • pecan 3.14159265 says:

Hahahaha. Thanks for the pics! He has the fluffiest orange belly. The orange kind of makes his belly look like bad 70s shag carpet, but he’s still in style.

      • Kimaroo - 100% Pure Natural Kitteh says:

He appreciates being called “fluffy”. My sister-in-law’s name for him is Fat Bastien… the other day my 4 yo neice walked in the door and said “FAT BASTIEN!” without any prompting whatsoever..

Good thing Bastien is too dumb to be offended.

        • catastrophegirl chooses not to fly says:

widget actually answers to “fatty” if i call for him. of course he also answers to “treats!” and “snacktime”

  12. HogwartsProfessor says:

A THREE DAY WEEKEND! Three days without being anywhere near my bosses! Woooooooooo!

My honeybunch went home to see the ‘rents for the weekend yesterday. He gets today AND Tuesday off (lucky dog). He said I need a government job, ha ha. Like I could get one. :P He’ll call me here and there, and the rest of the time I’ll probably be cleaning out the garage. I need to get rid of a bunch of stuff and try to scrape some moolah together so I can go see him. It’s my turn because he came here last time. Tickets are like $500 and I don’t have a credit card.

I wish that thing I put up for sale would sell.

    • ArcanaJ says:

Have a glorious weekend, m’dear! And don’t spend all your time cleaning.

The family and I embark on our annual camping trip on Monday, so I won’t be around for a whole week. My brother will be here to take care of our mother. A WHOLE WEEK away from my mother. I’ve earned it.

  13. JulesNoctambule says:

If Clare continues at the same level she’s at now, she’s sure to celebrate her 13th birthday in two weeks! She’s down four ounces from her last weigh-in and has had some trouble keeping food down but she’s still eating and active. I’m still not sure if her outliving her initial prognosis will make the inevitable easier or harder.

    • HogwartsProfessor says:

*hug* Hope she makes it, and has a nice birthday.

    • catastrophegirl chooses not to fly says:

may i suggest clam juice? mixed in with cat food it can make it more appealing due to the level of stinkiness. highest natural source of taurine available in a food. check the grocery store next to the bloody mary mix.

      • JulesNoctambule says:

Extra-stinky cat — my dream realised at last!
We’ve been giving her tuna and chicken from a can; she loves the juiciness of it all. Clam juice is a good idea, though, since she loves seafood. I’ll try to give her dry food now and she just glares at me like she’s thinking ‘What is this crap?’

        • catastrophegirl chooses not to fly says:

we use it for cats taking meds that make their sense of taste/smell change. if a cat can’t smell their food they don’t want it.

  14. locakitty says:

I got a new job! The pay isn’t what I thought it would be, but it’s a start in the right direction. Hopefully the raises come fast and furious. Until then, I keep the call center job part time (if they’ll let me, I find out tonight when I go in to talk to them).
