Warehouse workers at the Carlsberg brewery in Denmark have been striking this week, not over wages or unsafe working conditions, but because they can only drink on the job during lunch… and not as much as the company’s truck drivers.

Until the last week, “there has been free beer, water and soft drinks everywhere,” said a rep for the company. “Yesterday, beers were removed from all refrigerators. The only place you can get a beer in future is in the canteen, at lunch.”

The rep said that the strike occurred because the warehouse workers wanted the same beer-drinking privileges the company’s drivers have: Up to 3/day, not including lunch.

Between the warehouse workers and sympathizers, about 800 Carlsberg employees didn’t show up to work on Wednesday. That number dwindled to 250 by the second day.

Lest you’re concerned about the Carlsberg drivers being allowed three beers (not including lunch time beers), the company mouthpiece reminds us all that Carlsberg’s trucks have alcohol locks so drivers would not be able to drink too much and drive.
