9 Things Star Wars can teach us about frugality. Number one: “1) They do their own maintenance and repairs. Rebels don’t take the x-wing into the local Space Lube Garage.” [Wise Bread]

the rebels were frugal because they HAD to be. They were a rag-tag bunch who didnt have unlimited resources (like the empire did).

Now the jedis were just practical for the most part & frugality often plays a part in practicality.

Yes, I was an star wars obsessed little kid long ago.

Normally, being a fan of the darkside that I am, I would say that you have explained the reason why the Empire ruled. They had money, the deathstar, and cookies. But, the rebels had Carrie Fischer in a Bikini and those buns…. so its kind of a tie there.

  3. Perhaps if the Rebels has sprung a little bit on the Space Lube Garage, the hyperdrive motor on the Millennium Falcon would have worked come crunch time. Think about this… if the thing had worked, no minocs and no stomach acid wear and tear either.

In the words of Yoda, Wise pennies but foolish pounds they are.

Were the rebels truly running the place by employing best practices, they would have outsourced the MRO for their X-wings.

And the Empire totally tried to barter; they just didn’t succeed through a combination of bad faith (“Tell us where your base is…or we’ll blow up this planet” ) and stubborn trading partners (“Surrender now, and your friends will be spared”).

    Total coolness.

The article is all about saving money, but ends with a plug for a 50 dollar Star Wars collectible.

  8. NefariousNewt says:

The Rebels were in a unique position, challenging an Empire and having to do so with limited resources. Not to mention, they had to keep the location of their main base a secret. If you overlay this on our era, then it makes sense they wouldn’t pop down to the Space Lube or Jedi Mart, since that would attract unwarranted attention and derail their ability to put up a defense.

  9. SacraBos says:

@stevegoz: Tarkin: Tell us where you base is, and we’ll blow up this planet.
Leia: Don’t you mean OR you’ll blow up this planet? That’s a pretty important conjugation.
Tarkin: Ah, hmm, yeah. Sure. I mean “or”. So, where is your base?

You know, I was actually just talking about that with my husband last night when we were debating the extended warranty on the car I’m buying.

We kept getting confused as to why we’d want one plan and the next, because the stuff they covered were things we knew how to do and did ourselves.

@suburbancowboy: Maybe it was a special challenge to see if you’d apply what you learned. ;)
