The final straw was a double whammy. She'd bought a fryer from there, the cord broke. we tried to find a replacement, only to discover that this was a "walmart only" product (basically a loss leader) and every piece was just different enough to not take the risk of purchasing a comparable product.
then a week later, my wife (an avid collector and nurturer of hermit crabs) saw that they had hermies new to their pet section and saw how ill they were treated. She tried to talk to the head of the pet department but was shown indifference.

Finally she gave up on walmart permanantly. turns out she was only saving about $10 a month getting the things she normally got there.
Not a big loss.

The US postal system happens to be one the most efficient and effective organizations in our country. How much mail have you lost lately? Any bills that have not gotten to their destination? Tried sending anything to Hawaii or Alaska via those private carriers like FedEx? How much did it cost? 41 cents?

Getting back on topic...

I'm from the land of Target (Minnesota). We're lucky enough to have beautiful Target stores here that have great selection. I've lived in other parts of the country, like Oklahoma, where Target is worse than Kmart and Walmart. In many rural areas of the US there isn't anything but Walmart.

Until people start following up their outrage by changing how they shop, all the complaining is just online therapy.

As for the poster who said HEB is overpriced: Not in Austin they're not! HEB has excellent prices, friendly employees, & great selections.

Note to OP: Please stop giving your money to Wal-Mart! There's a reason they have a horrible reputation.

My house in Austin was close to the original CM, and I got hooked on it there. I still get to shop at CM, their Fort Worth store is the closest grocery store to my house actually. There aren't any "regular" HEBs around here but as you say CM doesn't always have higher prices. Typically it's the same for "normal" stuff that's carried in both stores (eggs, milk, etc.) but there are definitely some pricey luxury goods to be had at CM. And the wine... damnation take the wine section that threatens my budget every time I go there!

1. Really? He's suicidal for almost getting hit by a forklift? I think that since walmart sells guns and ammo there are much better ways of doing it if you're going to be suicidal.

2. I don't see where he made any comments at all, unless you mean the side commentary, which probably was just sarcasm.

3. According to his statement, Shonda only turned her light off after she was done with the person immediately ahead of him, presumably after he'd been standing there waiting for the conveyor belt to clear. She shut the light off as he started loading his items, not as he was hunting for a line to get into, or while he was 3 people back. Basic courtesy, as well as most stores' policy says that you help all the customers in your line even if you've turned off your light. You can say "I'm closed after That person" to people who get in line AFTER your light is off, but if they're there they should get rung up. I'd say Shonda and Yvonne are the people with the bad attitudes.

4. Regardless of if she wanted to deal with him or not, she's not on her time, she's on wal-mart's time. By this measure she has to do what wal-mart asks of her, which in Shonda's case means ringing out customers, and in Yvonne's case means supervising the cashiers and handling customer concerns/complaints. If they don't want to do that job they can clock out and go home. Otherwise quit bitching about it.

LONG ago when I worked at walmart... we had a manager that would have NEVER put up with a customer being talked to that way. Of course this must've been nearly 20 years ago & it was in a small town.... not some ghetto'd area of austin where complaints such as yours are probably pretty common.

And btw.... target creeps me out. Its more suited for bored upper-middleclass suburban housewives than an average working class joe like me.

As was said, this was more of a people issue than a company issue. This story is full of stupid people. The customer who didn't immediately drop the merchandise and walk out, dialing the corporate help line, and the two bitch queens who decided that brutalizing the customer and hiding their identity are acceptable business practices.

No offense to any Shandas and Yvonnes out there.

You know, it's funny that you say this. In my hometown, for the longest time there was only Wal-Mart. It was clean, friendly, and well-maintained. A few years back, the town got a Target, and the Wal-Mart is now dirty, the employees either uncaring or rude, and inventory not the best. You'd think it would have worked out in the opposite order, but it didn't.

As far as Target, if you want proof that any place can have the bad employees, let me point you to the little old lady with big silver-white hair at the Target we have here. She's rude, impatient, and just not pleasant at all. Just recently, I was having problems with my debit card and the reader would not scan it. I handed it to her and said, "It's been acting up, can you try it up top?" She grabs the card, jerks the reader I had been trying around to her and says, "You were putting it in wrong." (I was not.) She then tries to get it to read several times before letting out an exasperated sigh and running it through the reader built into the keyboard on her POS terminal. It worked the first try. She said not another word the rest of the time I was there, but shoved my bags at me when I was ready to leave.
That was one of the more pleasant times I've had her as my cashier.

2. They didn't have his favorite deodorant, so he's miffed and buy a different one. Here, he makes rude comments ... the poster is not a pleasant person at all!

3. The cashier turned off the light BEFORE he was served. And the poster was mental enough to try to force her to serve him. This guy is a mental case. He should of been escorted out by a police and barred from ever setting foot in any store in the state.

4. The supervisor did not really want to deal with him, and I do not blame her. This guy is 100% a-hole.

So to summarize, this guy need to take himself out of the gene pool, the Darwin way. The world would be a better place.

That said, lets look at this from a human perspective.

at 10pm-ish, who on this planet would want to be working at a register? And, if you're about to get off work, checking out another customer is about the last thing you'd want to do.
Does that excuse her attitude? Hells to the no. But it does make it understandable, and it's a natural reaction to have. I've been at walmart at 10pm. It feels like the store is closed. The porters are bringing out freight, and they don't look where they're going. The people working in the departments are busy stocking the freight, not helping customers. The cashiers are fewer and farther between than any other time of day, and other than the shift differential, have no interest in being there at that time of night. If that's the kind of atmosphere they want to keep, so be it, but I'm not shopping there anymore.

If I were you, I'd call 1-800-Wal-Mart and complain. Be sure to mention the store number, position, and names of all those involved. It really works.

When you make the call, it goes from the top down. When I was a customer service manager I saw cashiers and other supervisors get praise or discipline based on those calls.

Now, if that store has rotten management in general, all bets are off. Find a different Wal-mart, because it's not going to get any better until corporate gets involved.

They're clean, the employees are nice (and usually related to you, your neighbor, or went to elementary school with your aunt or something. Ah, small towns). They're polite, they have a good selection of stuff.

Where I live now, there's so much competition that Wal-Mart doesn't even try. They're a little dirty, very cramped, disorganized, and I barely can get a smile out of the cashiers, let alone a polite conversation. So I don't go there often. If I can't buy it from Harris Teeter, then I usually get it from the local Target (which is understocked, understaffed, overpriced, but clean) or order it online.

Each store is a different experience.

Stories (and experiences) like this are the exact reason I refuse to subject myself to Wal-Mart. The world needs more principled consumers who won't give their money to crappy companies. Consumerists unite!

Besides that, the cashier was rude, no doubt. But the supervisor should have behaved professionally. I'll give the cashier the benefit of the doubt. Probably a crappy day. The supervisor has no excuse.

That's what retailers the likes of Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and the rest of the lot expect the consumers to be. Get beat up, do as they want you to do and get out of their stores.

This Rope-A-Dope gets screwed around like that poor soul did, I won't even bother waiting to get home to fire off a EECB to Bentonville, I'll sit in their parking lot and use my blackberry to destroy them with. Then go to the local Target to get my items and head home in good cheer.
