@Michael Belisle: Or two people who have to drive to work because there's no other transportation. My husband and I work 24 miles away in OPPOSITE directions. We both drive AWAY from the city to get to our jobs. There is no reliable public transportation to either of our current job locations.

On the other hand, my husband is getting a new job, we just don't know the location yet. If it's in the city, he'll be taking public transportation and our gas costs will halve.

A guy over at the MTBR.com forums snapped cellphone pics of one of these bikes at a Wal-Mart so we could all have a laugh, which means they're actually sold in stores.

...just not in my city or any other Wal-Mart I've been to.

In the US, electricity mostly comes from hydro-electric dams or coal.

The US is the "Saudi Arabia" of coal ... which is why coal fired plants can make electricity so cheap. Filling my battery costs less than 50 cents.

Add more nuclear powerplants, and I will be even happier about rding an electric bike.

@SweetBearCub: Buy a used recumbent-trike off of craigslist. Then add a c-lyte 5303 hubmotor kit. Pay someone to put it together for you.

You'll get 25+ mph instead of 6 mph. With a 530x motor and a 48V LiFePO4 battery, you won't have to pedal, ever, unless you really want to.

Oddly enough, up until a few months ago I was wanting to buy a similar electric bike, as I live in San Francisco, eco country!

Unfortunately, my physical therapy didn't pan out too well, so my doc wrote me a prescription for an electric wheelchair.

Wish it went faster than 5.8MPH though!

Still, it's nice to be able to zip along at about jogging speed virtually for free!

If you want a decent range ( greater than 10 miles ), get a Lithium Iron Phosphate battery pack from a Shnaghai or HK vendor ( search for LiFePO4 on ebay ).

My e-recumbent goes 20+ mph, and moves my fat arse about 17 miles before it needs to be recharged ... and yes, I commute with it.

@Michael Belisle: Ummm. I drive one car that gets an avg of 24 mpg and another than has an avg of 26 mpg. In a 2 car household, we generally do about $400 in gas, so that's my monthly gas cost. The above poster could have three Prius's for all we know.
