I've actually shopped at this Kmart back when it wasn't a huge annoying depressing chore to do so. That was a long, long time ago. Any time since then that I've set foot in this shop, merchandise is all over the place, the cashiers and workers don't care about anything, and the population who shops there regularly are pretty rude and classless people. It feels dirty and you want to shake your bags out after you leave the store lest you picked up some sort of 'guest' traveling with you as you perused the aisles. Makes for a really unpleasant shopping experience.

This melee does not surprise me one bit, and it only amazes me that it doesn't happen on a weekly basis. And it's also the reason I choose to drive 10 miles to a decent Kmart rather than 5 to this particular Kmart. This one should burn to the ground, frankly. It's that bad. It didn't have to be, but they insist on hiring the worst managers who hire the worst people and it compounds itself until you have situations like this brawl erupting and making headline news.

In my experience, how nice any of the KMart/Target/WalMart stores are is mostly determined by how long it's been since it was built or remodeled. They all seem to start out very nice, but get run down. And it's amazing how well the store's condition seems to be reflected by its shoppers.

There was one particular KMart when I was a kid that I saw go through the cycle a couple of times - bright, shiny, new, and pretty "in"; gradually declining and becoming a place that only nasty people shopped; being remodeled and back to being that bright, shiny, fun place to shop . . . .

It figures that this would happen in Wauwatosa, though. For those not familiar with the Milwaukee, Wauwatosa used to be suburban, but it's been a bit ravaged by urban sprawl and people flocking out to Waukesha. There's kinda three areas to Tosa: a semi-upscale mall with surrounding upper-middle class housing and strips, a trendy downtown/main street area, and what used to be middle class housing areas that really got burned by sprawl. Not sure exactly where this Kmart is, but my guess is that it's somewhere in the strip area and all three groups kinda decended in there. Milwaukeeans are just a bit on the spendthrift side of things. Sad to see people from back home acting like yokels.

Then again, Wauwatosa isn't too far from West Bend, where they trample each other to get their hands on the PS3.
