I have read that the way huge slaughterhouses produce ground beef means that the average hamburger can contain flesh from up to 50 cows. Apart from the obvious choice of becoming a vegetarian, one way to reduce e.coli risk is to ask the butcher to grind the beef while you wait. This is pretty common in Europe, you just point to the chunk of beef you want, and they grind it in front of you. Packaged ground beef is just too risky, you have no idea where it comes from, what's in it or who prepared it. At least if you have your local butcher grind it you know what you're buying, and it's less likely to have been sprayed with feces as underpaid, under-trained workers try to get their hourly quota done faster in a massive slaughterhouse clear across the country.

Consumerista

@mupethifi: Seriously. I don't want to go victim blamin' here, but I'm honestly curious as to what kind of person buys prepackaged hamburgers? I'm just not seeing the benefit, besides saving like 3 minutes it takes to pack the meat (and it's not like pre-packaged burgers don't fall apart on the grill anyway).

I mean, the grocery store ground meat isn't the healthiest meat in the world, but:
a) It's cheaper
b) It's ground on site, within the last 48 hours
c) You control the leanness

Seriously, what's the product benefit?

spinachdip
