Couldn't AOL still try to claim payment from her mother's estate, i.e. Brenda? I'd follow this through until the bozos agree to cancel the service retroactively to the date of your first call. Mail them (snail mail) with a cc to the Better Business Bureau and Attorney General's office for your state.

Pelagius

Oh, and call the local media and point them at this (but make sure you have first names for the people you talked to). Nothing like a truly heartless story and some terrible PR to make AOL reverse themselves.
My condolences. What a terrible thing to have to deal with, and to have the horrible service on top of it.

Just cancel the credit card they're using, or call the credit card company (with whom, I assume, you have already established your status as executrix of your mother's estate) and have them start charging it back. It'll get cancelled immediately -- and if AOL gets snippy again, let them try and collect from your mother.

Das Ubergeek
