<![CDATA[ NeatReceipts Offers Extra Neat Customer Service ]]> Christopher made a mistake when he ordered a NeatReceipts scanner from Woot. He made some incorrect assumptions and ordered the Windows version of the device when he uses a Mac. But even though he was the one who made the mistake, the neat people at NeatReceipts happily swapped scanners with him—for free.

I recently bought a NeatReceipts unit on Woot for $75 ($150 MSRP). I've wanted one for a while, and the price was hard to beat. Before buying it, I looked at the NeatCo website to verify which product I was getting; and I noticed they offered two versions: Mac and PC. I assumed it was the same hardware and that I could just get a copy of the Mac version of the software later. Bad consumer = me. The unit arrived, and I opened it and plugged it in. My iMac didn't recognize the scanner and the bundled software was Windows only. After more thoroughly reading through all of the support docs on the NeatCo website, I realized the Mac and PC versions were truly two different products. My heart sank, but I emailed NeatCo support anyway. To my amazement, they (next day) gave me a link to download the Mac version of the software with a serial number to register it and offered to ship me a replacement scanner (Mac version). I happily agreed. A little over a week later, my Mac edition NeatReceipts scanner arrived. Return shipping for the Windows version? Pre-paid.

I could not be happier with the speed and friendliness of the support I received, especially considering the mistake was mine. NeatCo rocks the party.

I just connected the scanner a few minutes ago and started my first batch of receipts. I cannot yet vouch for the product, but if it's even half as good as their customer service, it should be fantastic.

<![CDATA[ Database Bug At Woot Leaves Reader Wary Of Ordering ]]> Robear wanted to order from shirt.woot, but something strange happened when he went to register. After choosing a username and entering his e-mail address, he noticed that all of the forms were pre-populated with another customer's information...including that user's credit card information. He contacted Woot to try to find out what could have happened, but Woot either hasn't figured it out yet, or just isn't responding. (UPDATE: Response from Woot below.)

On September 28th, 2009 I saw a shirt that I wanted to buy on the famous shirt.woot.com website. I clicked the "I want one" button and created an account by supplying a username and email address. I was then taken to my account information page to fill in my personal information. This is where the problem began. To my surprise, almost all of the fields on this page were already pre-populated with another user's information. This included the following information about that user:

- Their name
- Pieces of credit card information (xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-, expiry date)
- Their shipping address (this user's place of work)
- Their billing address (this user's apartment)

Although this user's credit card number was luckily not revealed in its entirety to me, I am guessing that if I had left it untouched and simply clicked the "this info is correct" button I would have been able to complete my order and have it charged to this user. Upon seeing this user's information, I immediately sent am email to Woot's bug reporting address codeslaves@woot.com, alerting them to what had happened and to what I referred to as a "Massive Security/Privacy Breach". I attached a screenshot of the information that was shown to me and I also asked that they remove the account I had created from their site and disassociate my email address and username from the compromised user's account.

Two weeks passed, and I had still not received a response from Woot. So on October 12th, I then sent them a second email, this time to privacy@woot.com. I found this address in their privacy policy, and it is to be used to request removal of personal information from their database. I told them that I had not heard back from them and included my original email and screenshot. 18 days have since passed, and I have still not received any responses from anyone at Woot. I can also still log on to their site using the account I had created and see the other user's information. I should also probably point out that this user works for what I will call a fairly well known organization in New York City. A simple web search confirmed this, as I was able to find this person's name and email address on this organization's website.

So, in total, it has now been 32 days and I have yet to receive any response from Woot. I personally find this unacceptable, considering the fact that I am trying to bring a problem with their site to their attention. I am wondering how I should proceed from here. Should I try contacting the other user and alerting them to the fact that their personal information has been leaked to me and potentially many other people? I would like this person to know that their information has been compromised, but I don't know how they would react. I would prefer to do this anonymously. Also, should Woot not be obligated to respond to a personal information removal request within a certain time frame? If so, do you know what it is? What do I do If i never hear back from them?

As far as my relationship with Woot is concerned, I think it's clear that I wont be purchasing anything from them anytime in the future.

Any e-commerce experts have any ideas about what could be going on? Have any other readers experienced customer database strangeness at Woot?

UPDATE: Woot has contacted Robear, and the company's founder and CEO showed up in the comments to this post to express his point of view and concerns. Click here to go to the thread.

Unfortunately, this is indeed the first our team has been aware of this report or any similar circumstance. Robear, thank you for identifying the glitch and taking steps to contact us. My apologies for our communication problems after your unsettling experience. Our customer service team's primary email (service@woot.com) should have been in the loop on the privacy address and we're tracking down what may have occurred whether it was missed on our end or if perhaps a follow up was lost to you - in either case it is clearly our mistake for this not elevating to our development team with urgency. I would also like to confirm that we have the screenshot you supplied at this time and that is of great assistance in the matter.

As to the issue reported, be assured, no credit card information or even the ability to order would have been available with the profile mismatch that is described. We use ASP.net profile management web services from Microsoft that are in widespread secure use, but security of actual transaction information is protected by other features designed at woot. However, the population on your order form of a users name and address is an unacceptable fault to have occurred and we will take steps to ensure it doesn't occur again.

As privacy geeks ourselves, we are obsessive about these matters and value the trust that others place with us. If anyone has a privacy related concern, I would like to make sure future communication issues do not occur. My email at woot is mrutledge@woot.com - if you or anyone else has a security issue that needs my awareness, please cc me on any correspondence. (also, side topic but if you have a service issue that's not taken care of to your satisfaction, I would enjoy a direct report on that as well - while we set expectations low on service levels, we pride ourselves on responsiveness and take quick corrective action when necessary)

Thanks to the Consumerist and readers for being there as a resource to bring this to our attention, and thank you again Robear for your time involved. Once this matter is comfortably resolved, I hope we can share a chuckle on the irony of the shirt that it occurred on.

<![CDATA[ DeadlyDeal Neither Deadly Nor A Deal, Just Lame ]]> Brandon regrets having done business with DeadlyDeal.com earlier this year. He figured he "couldn't go wrong" with his mystery box purchase—"after all, my dealings with Woot.com had all been more than satisfactory so far." But DeadlyDeal is no Woot, friends. Well, except maybe in the creative writing department, because there's no way those DeadlyDeal customer testimonies ("Thanks for my free iPhone!") are legit.

Brandon writes:

Mid May of this year, I fell into a trap. DeadlyDeal.com offered a mystery box guaranteed to satisfy. I thought I couldn't go wrong with a $46 dollar purchase (with supposed free shipping), after all, my dealings with Woot.com had all been more than satisfactory so far. After a long wait, I received my mystery box with only the invoice inside identifying it from deadlydeal in June (2nd to be exact), which contained an already opened Mr. Clean AutoDry Car Wash starter kit (retail $30 from Amazon at the time). I'm perfectly happy to wash my car with a hose, bucket and sponge, and so attempted to arrange an RMA for the product I was not happy with. I received no reply from their RMA team, nor their listed support email that I tried several times to reach through June. Finally in July I got a response when I tried posting on their message board. They issued me an RMA number and instructions to return the product.

Recently, against my better judgment I went back to DeadlyDeal.com when I noticed an item for sale I had been watching for (a credit card lock pick set). I felt a bit more comfortable in knowing exactly what it was I was ordering, even given their long shipping time in the past. However, it seems they don't want my business. Not only have I still not received the refund for the RMA I returned 2 months ago, (order # 8561), but I also have not received my latest order (# 10520) which supposedly shipped 8/27/09. All but one of my contacts to the company have been ignored, and have yet to actually resolve anything.

I used paypal for my first transaction. Since it was more than 40 days past the original purchase, they refuse to take any action. Do I need to issue a chargeback on my second order before I get stuck in the same situation?

Yes. Get the hell away from DeadlyDeal and stop doing business with them, Brandon! You can buy cheap, probably foreign-made crap at a dozen other websites any day of the week. DeadlyDeal does not need—or apparently want—your business. If they did, would they have sent you a previously opened, $30 car wash kit in your $46 mystery box in the first place?

<![CDATA[ Woot! Replaces Shirt Stolen By The U.S. Post Office ]]> Two weeks ago I wrote that Woot! hadn't replaced a shirt stolen by the U.S. Post Office. Well, I was wrong. Unbeknownst to me, Woot! shipped out a brand new replacement shirt, just as I had requested.

They put the new shirt in the mail without mentioning it to me, and I hadn't received it at the time I posted. Thanks, Woot!, for fixing everything! Let's all hope that the U.S. Postal employee who stole the original shipment falls into a letter sorter.

<![CDATA[ The Post Office Stole My Woot! Shirt! ]]> I ordered an awesome shirt from Shirt.Woot! How awesome? Awesome enough for the U.S. Post Office to tear it right out of the super-durable SmartPost package Woot uses to protect their shirts. The Post Office, bastion of empathy that it is, didn't want me to miss my order completely, so they delivered my ripped empty package wrapped in an obnoxious "WE CARE" apology bag. Heartbroken, I tried emailing Woot for help...

For those who haven't used Shirt.Woot! before, it's very similar to regular Woot. A shirt goes on sale each night for $10 and remains available for 24 hours or until it sells out, whichever happens first. This design sold out in around an hour. Woot holds onto a number of shirts that they then sell for $15 after the one-day period ends. My design was still available for $15 when I sent an email explaining that I would prefer a replacement to a refund. Woot agreed, but quickly reversed themselves, claiming "that design has been discontinued," even though it was still clearly on sale for $15. I instead have my $10 back, but what I really wanted was the shirt.

Crushed, I decided to take my useless bags to the Post Office for an explanation. They offered none. Since Woot doesn't insure their shipments, the Post Office declared that they were blameless.

This isn't the first time Consumerist has had a bad experience with a Woot! order. I may not have an awesome shirt, but at least I no longer trouble myself by visiting Shirt.Woot! at midnight to look for new designs.

Update: Woot! replaced the stolen shirt!

<![CDATA[ Update: Woot Customer Demands Non-Existent Black iPod Headphones ]]> Last week, Woot asked Consumerist readers what it should do about a customer who was irate that their black iPod came with white headphones, despite the fact that Apple does not make them. The post was notable for several reasons. One, I think it might have been the fist time we posted a complaint from a company. Two, with over 477 comments, I think we broke a new comment record on a single post. After carefully evaluating your responses, Woot has said they'll offer Millard a full refund and send a box with a pre-paid shipping label to send the iPod back in. This is acceptable to me. As I've said in the past, it's all about the money. Once you have your money back as a customer, there's nothing to complain about.

<![CDATA[ Woot Customer Demands Non-Existent Black iPod Headphones ]]> In what is probably the second-worst consumer complaint we've received, Millard is mad at deal-a-day site Woot because he bought a black iPod from them and it came with white headphones. He demands black headphones. Woot needs your help in solving this consumer crisis.

Millard does not care that Apple only makes white ones (unless you're getting special U2 iPods, which this wasn't). Now he wants Woot to pay for the black headphones he was "forced" to buy so they would match. It was very important to both him and his daughter, for whom the iPod was a birthday gift, that the headphones and iPod matched.

Woot.com was actually the ones who forwarded over the email exchange to us. They're hoping that Consumerist readers can offer advice on how they should react to the situation. At the bottom of the exchange posted below is a poll where you can write your tips and vote on other others'. Woot has promised to take them under advisement.

Hello Rutherford,

I never knew that this piece was going to come this way, and if you ask me (your customer) I fell that Woot should inform their customers of this type of detail issue. Well ... it now cost me an additional $29.00 to purchase a black set of ear plugs (that are for sale) to match the IPOD that I purchased from Woot in Black. How is this fair
to me .... the customer that feels he was mislead?

I hope you can do something to off-set my additional expense.

Best regards,

Hello Rutherford,

I'm really surprised to see that you're (WOOT) is taking this stance against one if its customers. The reason I felt mislead is because I was asked to select between "White" or "Black", and I was under the assumption that, again "White" meant totally "White" and that "Black meant totally Black". It never mentioned that only to IPOD itself
would be affected by the color, and that the other accessories would be shipped in a standard White color.

That's like purchasing a new car in the color of your choice (Blue) and when you finally take it home and you open the hood or truck ... its pink in color. Well when you call your sales person and report your finding, the customer support person states that it only comes in that color. Well if you were never told this information, would you feel mislead just because you never opened these areas to check for your self. Well ... I feel mislead, and so did my little daughter that received it item from us for her birthday!!!

Please review your customer satisfaction policy to see if there is any language within that takes care of your customer ... under this type of circumstance.

Please advise,

Millard R."

<![CDATA[ Quickest Measure Of Gustav's Negative Economic Impact: Woots Per Capita ]]> UPDATE: Prompted by this post, Woot did their own post analyzing their internal data much more thoroughly.

It will take some time for the economic impact of Hurricane Gustav on New Orleans to be calculated, unless the journalist or statistician in question is a fan of daily gadget deal site Woot! As part of the forums area, the site throws out various data, like how many units did people buy, percentage of sales per hour, and a Woots per capita map. The map clearly shows that basically no one in Louisiana is buying jack from Woot right now, and, no doubt, from any else. How will we know when people have returned to Louisiana and are buying again? By watching the delta on the Woots per capita map!

<![CDATA[ Woot Treats Its Customers Nicely ]]> con_monkeyandcat.jpg We're already fond of Woot for consistently having the most entertaining ad copy around, but a reader has reported that when they recently screwed up a large number of Zune orders—and not even in a terrible way—they shipped free $100 accessory kits to everyone who was affected, then sent out a frank email that explained the situation and guaranteed a full refund to anyone who still wasn't satisfied. They handled the situation quickly and in a way that will likely prevent many customers from complaining or feeling cheated. And best of all, they were up front about the snafu and treated their customers with respect.

According to the email, Woot miscounted their brown Zunes and realized this only as they were preparing their shipments. They substituted black models for brown:

...While many did not care about color, and some may perceive the black color to be a higher value (correct at least from Woot's financial perspective), the dilemma was of course it wasn't what you ordered. Unfortunately, we also had little time to act as we were at the fringe of shipment expectations already. The story does get better, however; we were able to persuade our marketing minds that this was a good opportunity for their budget to expand:

We have included a bonus: A Microsoft Zune Travel Pack has been shipped with your order

The Zune Travel Pack has 5 products including the Zune Premium Earphones, Dual Connect Remote, AC Charger, Sync cable, and a decent bag. These are new retail boxed and carry a Microsoft MSRP of $99.99. Information from Microsoft and links to street pricing are here: http://www.zune.net/en-us/accessories/zune/zunetravelpack.htm#

While your orders left our building only recently, they are on their way. I hope that those of you who are fans of the brown zune find our emergency solution to be acceptable-it was a rather expensive action. Due to logistics delay, there was no time available to make this an opt-in program (or everyone's zunes would not ship until next week.) As things stand now, if this solution does not meet with your acceptance, we're down to a last resort of issuing a call-tag to pick it back up (once it arrives) and issue you a full refund.

Nicely done, Woot! You seem both smarter and nicer than, say, the execs at EB Games. Please buy them.

Meghann's may have been part of a bad batch. Some other Woot!ers DVD players didn't turn on, or they reported problems with HDMI, S-VIDEO or sound. Still others said theirs worked fine.

Hey, you takes your refurbs and you takes your chances. Mankind shall live to Woot again. — BEN POPKEN

<![CDATA[ What Should Meghann Do With Her Brokeass Woot DVD Player? ]]> After Meghann pitched her woe about getting a Woot!ed DVD player that wouldn't turn on, we tried to convince her to do ship it back to Toshiba.

Fiery, rubix-cube-on-the-head that she is, Meghann refused. She didn't see the value in paying shipping to and from California for a new refurbed DVD player that she thought probably wouldn't work either. She said, "Why sink money into a dvd player that's so bad it's on Woot!?"

Unable to disarm her impenetrable logic, we said, okay, let's ask the fray.

Should Meghann ship the player back to Toshiba? Or should she make a video (set to music) of her smashing it?

<![CDATA[ Woot: Thanks for the Broken DVD Player ]]> We've been a member of Woot since Feb '05, but until the other day, we never saw anything we needed. Then our DVD player broke, and Woot had one, and it was like 40 bucks, and so we finally tried Woot!

5 days later a totally broken DVD player with a 30 day manufacturer's warranty showed up at our door. The player will not even turn on.

    More inside.

    According to Woot's return policy:

"Unless we specifically tell you not to, call the manufacturer of the product you bought. You will likely get a replacement of a new model or better item from them. If we still haven't dissuaded you, email rma@woot.com with your woot order number, the name of the product you are returning, and the detailed problem with the item. We will respond with return authorization by the next business day. Because we aren't likely to have a replacement in stock, you should be prepared for a refund-only option if that's all we can do. Know that return freight will be at your expense. Again, you will probably get a better deal from the manufacturer, or whoever else handling customer service for that product."

So that leaves us with a 30-day manufacturer's warranty (from date of purchase, which was several days ago.) The warranty does not cover any shipping costs. So, while Woot seemed like a nice idea, the reality is pretty crappy. For what we will end up paying to ship this item to California and back, we could have just bought a player from someone who would take care of us if the product was defective. Woot! is a very popular site, and we often feature deals from them on Consumerist, but we have to say that we wish we'd never wooted.

We're not the only ones experiencing difficulty, we've also received complaints from two readers about a Woot!ed Belkin XM Radio and a Cobra Electronics handheld GPS 1000 not working. Woot states its policy very clearly, and that there is risk involved in purchasing from them. Is the risk worth the reward? We're not so sure.

Since we don't foresee needing a blood pressure monitor or a "game bridge" any time soon, we probably shall not woot again, and this makes us sad. —MEGHANN MARCO

    Toshiba SD-4990 DVD Player
    Pricegrabber Price Range: 71.00-116.99
    Woot! Price 39.99+5.00 shipping

So, what do you guys think? Should we pay to have it sent to Toshiba and repaired "again"? Or cut our losses and get out now?

    <![CDATA[ Speaking of Deals... ]]>

We think Woot! is just a swell site: a decent to great deal every day, accompanied by a vivid and often hilarious description of the product. We've often thought there should be more Woot! rip-offs.

And now there is! Tanga has shamelessly torn a page out of Woot!s playbook. One deal a day, lasting as long as they still have the product in stock. Where Tanga tries to set itself apart, though, is by appealing to the geek: for example, the first Tanga deal was an Xbox 360 for $100 off retail price. Today's is Alhambra... the board game, not the castle, for $10.

We'll likely fold this into the Morning Deals Round-Up from now on, but we wanted to make sure you guys knew there was another cool site putting the spotlight on one deal a day. They aren't competitors! They're fellow deals lovers!

<![CDATA[ A Very Special Morning Deal: Woot! Off! ]]>

You know, when there's a Woot! Off, that really deserves its own post. And there is. Right now!

For those who aren't aware of the wonderful consumer euphoria of a Woot! Off, it's simple: go to Woot! Right now, there's a Logitech Cordless Headset for the Xbox at $5.99, an absurdly good deal. But maybe you don't have an Xbox. So click refresh in ten minutes and some equally absurdly good deal will replace it as soon as Woot! sells out. Shipping is always 5 bucks.

In short, some people waste entire days clicking refresh on a Woot! off. The scope, number and array of deals that will come up over the next 18 hours will leave even the most slattern-faced consumer weak at the knees and turn their genitals into tingling jelly.

    Go! Go! Woot! Off!
