A Vitamin Water promotion in Canada played bilingual Mad Libs, pairing a word in English with a word in French for what were sure to be hilarious results. The end product was not so hilarious when the paired words were “you” in English and the French word for “late.” A woman whose younger sister has autism and cerebral palsy opened up the “YOU RETARD” bottle, and was offended. It’s New Year’s Eve, and we have some drinking suggestions for you.
New York magazine has a good write-up of Function Drinks, an “enhanced water” company that has the marketing advantage of being founded by a doctor. Although their nutritional claims appear to be a little more scientifically researched than, say, Vitamin Water, the sugar content is the same, and, as the article points out, there’s still no real consensus on whether antioxidants do any good.
There are two seals in place when the product is manufactured. One seal is a tamper band connected to the cap that separates upon opening the bottle, the other is a vacuum seal that is created during pasteurization. In rare instances, this vacuum seal may be broken. This may typically occur when a bottle experiences high impact due to rough handling through distribution. Air may potentially get into the bottle and mold may then be able to develop. As with any natural product without preservatives, such as bread and fruit, contact with outside air can cause a common mold to form. This is not something that would cause any health issues.

I was just drinking a bottle of Vitamin Water and there was a really gross thing in it. Industrial byproduct? Paper? Human skin? (See attached photos) Any ideas as to how I can figure out what the thing is and if its contact with my tongue is going to kill me? I have emailed the company.
What the heck is that thing?! Another picture, held aloft to the light, inside…
