TracFone is a pre-paid wireless cellphone company that people enjoy for its low cost and hate for its customer service. The problem comes from their globally outsourced and non-integrated call centers. Problems don't get solved. Emails go unreturned. Problems get stuck in infinitely recursive loops. Here's a typical story from reader Susan, "I asked them to escalate this to a supervisor. Three days later, I get a response saying that they have investigated the problem and I should call their support line. When I called the support line, they had no details of any prior communication and no way to resolve the problem. So I am back at step one. " Luckily for you, she found the numbers to escalate complaints up to the corporate level and got it solved: 1-800-876-5753 or 1-800-339-9345.

Get Your Expired Bloomingdale's Gift Card Balance Restored

Pam had a Bloomingdale's gift card that went unused for a couple of years, and when she tried to spend it last weekend, she was told it had expired. Pam found a way to get the balance restored fairly quickly, though. If you've got a card from before February 2008, try Pam's advice below.

This past weekend, I went to Bloomingdales with a gift card that I received two years ago. The salesperson told me it had "expired." I was furious. How could a gift card "expire" after such a short time? How could they take "my" money?

I searched Bloomingdales.com, and learned that gift cards purchased after Feb. 2008 never expire.

That didn't comfort me. Then I sent an email to Customer Service. Lo and behold: they replied with a phone number to call to "restore" the balance in my expired card:

A minute and one phone call later, I have the full $109 back on my card.

It's interesting how no one at the store was willing or able to give me this information — and how there's no directions about it on Bloomingdales.com.

First read this post about how to contact and conduct yourself when using executive customer service.

1) Call 866-249-3302. Ask to be transferred "to the office of Mr. Stumpf." Once you reach the secretary or switchboard operator, say the following:

"Hello, my name is ________. I'm one of your customers, and I was hoping to speak to Mr. Stumpf because I'm really getting frustrated with getting a problem resolved, and I know that your company doesn't want me to feel that way."

Charter Publishes Unlisted Numbers In The Phone Book

Tim enjoyed his unlisted phone number for over thirty years until Charter published it in the local phone book. Now he has two options: ditch his long-time number, or lose his cherished anonymity. Inside, Charter's apology letter.

Tim writes:

I thought you might find the attached (redacted) letter of interest. I’ve had an unlisted phone number for over 30 years, but no more. Moreover, although I use a PO box for billing and everything else, this letter was sent to my street address, so that is probably the address that was sold and will be associated with my phone number. The worst of both worlds.

You can't un-ring a bell, but at last Charter seems slightly sorry for the surprise outing. Other than not publishing Tim's number in the first place, how else, if at all, do you think Charter should respond?

How To Reach Someone At CVS

An anonymous tipster sent us the following information today on how to reach the executive level at CVS. Remember, don't use this to be a jerk to anyone—use it when you have a valid complaint that you can't get resolved through the recommended paths.

Here is some information you might find handy.

Call 401-765-1500 and press #

This will get you into the Company phone directory. All you have to do is say the name of the person you want to call...including the CEO (Tom Ryan). You wont get him, he has 2 dedicated secretaries, but it will get things moving along.

Also, if the people being "nasty" are pharmacists or in-training, the worst they will get is a slap on the hand. There is a lack of pharmacists in the country right now so no-one will get fired.

The most customer service can authorize is a $25 gift card. That is hard-coded into the system. The only person that can go over that limit is the District manager. You can usually find their name on the main store door (should list the manager and DM).

While their databases are basically the same, I did spot a few differences, so if you try the combo on one site and it doesn't work, check the other's.

Uhaul CEO Gave Out Cellphone Number On National TV, But Never Picks Up Or Returns Calls

In what looked like a daring move, the CEO of Uhaul, Joe Shoen, gave out his "cellphone number" on national TV and invited customers to call him with their complaints. The problem is, when you call, he doesn't pick up. If you leave a message, it's not returned. You get to hear Joe's gruffly charming voicemail message, but can't leave one of your own. His mailbox is full.

UPDATE: It seems this post may have had an effect. Commenters are reporting that Joe is now picking up. He even reportedly said to one of them, "Yes, this is Joe Shoen, are you calling about the internet?" Good on ya, Joe, now make sure that voicemail box is cleaned up.

The message says that he's sorry he missed your call, but he checks his voicemail frequently and if you leave your name and number he'll return your call. I count three lies in that statement. The only thing worse than not being responsive and transparent to your customers is lying to them that you are. When he gave out the number, Joe said, "People can't get this organization to behave, I can." Empty words, Joe, empty words.

However, reader Teresa says she's had success by calling the corporate customer complaint line at 800-789-3638.
