<![CDATA[ Get DirecTV Executive Customer Service ]]> If you're having DirecTV issues, here's two more top-level contacts for you to try:

Michael Johnson
Senior Director of Customer Service Communications
michael.johnson@directv.com

Donna Sadlouskos
Senior Manager Customer Satisfaction
dlsadlouskos@directv.com
310-964-4466

You can also try them on Twitter
or emailing some upper-level DirecTV VP's
or emailing or calling the CEO's office.

Amusing sidenote, not just consumers, company employees are also using our contact info database to send their own gripes to the top of the totem pole. I was checking the comments on an old post with the DirecTV CEO's number on it and there was a comment from a DirecTV tech who said he would be using the info to complain about his manager giving too much work to out-of-state techs.

<![CDATA[ What To Do When The Mistaken Identity Robo-Calls Won't Stop ]]> It's bad enough when robots call you ad nauseum to pitch you their products and political causes and track down unpaid bills, but it's even worse when the uncouth androids mistake you for another person.

Such is the plight of David, who is being hassled by cyborg creditors of his phone number's previous owner. He writes:

For the past couple of years we have been receiving calls from a half dozen assorted credit collection (or similar) agencies asking to speak to Mr. Donald (redacted). Generally we ignore the calls b/c if we don't know the caller Id we don't pick up, and they just leave a message. Occasionally I'll recognize one of the #'s, b/c they call so much, so I'll answer and tell them that Donald Orlando doesn't live here, never has lived here (at least in the 6 years I've lived here), and to please remove us from any and all lists.

But I'm guessing that his collection then gets sold to someone else who starts calling over and over, etc... Is there any way to permanently make these calls stop? Is there some way to convince 'someone' that they have the wrong phone # for this person? So that even if the collection gets sold, or someone new takes up the case, that they'll know they have a bad phone #?

The you can opt out of the calls, although that's only if the caller is playing by the rules and you manage to suffer through the entire message in order to hear the proper escape instructions. Otherwise I'd say a steady diet of call screening and possibly changing your number may be in order. If all else fails, you can always jack into the Matrix, learn kung fu, enlist the help of blade runners and bring the fight to Skynet.

Have any of you been in David's situation and managed to find your way out?

<![CDATA[ Is The FCC's iPhone Investigation Really About Number Portability? ]]> There's been a lot of talk online the past week about extending the principal of network neutrality to wireless networks, which may be partly why the FCC has asked Apple, Google, and AT&T to answer some questions about the rejected Google Voice iPhone app. Todd Barr at Bandwidth.com thinks that the reason may actually have to do with the concept of number portability.

Why number portability, when the app at the center of the investigation was about far more than that? Because the "telephony experience" has changed so much in recent years that preserving consumer independence involves more than just protecting a phone number—now it extends to things like determining how you route calls to that number, or what level of information you display to specific recipients, and so on.

Dave Rosenberg, a CNET blogger who wrote about this theory, points out that whether it's behind the FCC's investigation or not it's going to be an increasingly important issue for consumers:

For users to ultimately be in control of their telephony experience and to encourage the next wave of telephony innovation, the concept of portability will need to extend beyond just numbers to the telephony user experience.

Tier 2: Slightly Escalated Customer Service: 1-800-522-7341 #2

Comments from readers and around the net suggest that Tier 2 will follow the rules to the letter and not really give much nudge. If you need customer service people capable of independent thought and analysis, you'll want Tier 3, however, they can be hard to reach and seem to have a reputation for not returning phone calls.

<![CDATA[ Executive Email Carpet Bomb Pounds DirecTV Into Submission ]]> Reader Jesse was having an awful time explaining a simple problem to DirecTV. Thankfully, the EECB (Executive Email Carpet Bomb) was just the thing.

Jesse says:

Random note: I was in a pretty infuriating situation with DirecTV last night, where, after they failed on four different occasions since August to fix my house’s faulty cable, I decided I wanted to cancel my account. I was informed that despite their repeated inability to get things working, which had to that point entailed endless hours of hassle dealing with DirecTV’s labyrinthine phone system (at one point last night, I was transferred six times during the same call–the sixth time to a dead line), I’d still have to pay a $180 early termination fee since my contract wasn’t up. Of course, if I wanted to contest this there happened to be no phone number I could call or email address I could write to. Nope. Of course, if I wanted to contest this there happened to be no phone number I could call or email address I could write to. Nope. I’d have to deliver to DirecTV via chariot a complaint note written on a papyrus scroll in squid ink. (Well, I’d have to send a snail-mail letter to some Colorado address–same difference).

No thanks. Instead, I turned to The Consumerist, which recommends Executive Email Carpet Bombs in instances like this. In an EECB, you email a company’s top-level executives to inform them of ongoing issues that the folks below them haven’t been able to address. I refreshed my memory about how to best write an EECP, snagged the email address of DirecTV’s CEO, Chase Carey, which The Consumerist had helpfully posted, and went to work.

I sent the email at midnight last night and a half hour ago got a call from Ronnie in the DirecTV president’s office. He immediately offered to waive the cancellation fee, and that was that.

The morals of the story: DirecTV sucks, other than some dude named Ronnie, who’s pretty cool, and The Consumerist is amazing since, at least in this instance, one of its tactics worked exactly as advertised.

Yes, the EECB doesn't always work — but sometimes, gloriously, it does. For more information about launching your own EECB, click here. If you need some TLC from DirecTV, here's their contact information.

<![CDATA[ Reach TracFone Executive Customer Service ]]> TracFone is a pre-paid wireless cellphone company that people enjoy for its low cost and hate for its customer service. The problem comes from their globally outsourced and non-integrated call centers. Problems don't get solved. Emails go unreturned. Problems get stuck in infinitely recursive loops. Here's a typical story from reader Susan, "I asked them to escalate this to a supervisor. Three days later, I get a response saying that they have investigated the problem and I should call their support line. When I called the support line, they had no details of any prior communication and no way to resolve the problem. So I am back at step one. <![CDATA[ Reach Sears Executive Customer Service ]]> To escalate a complaint at Sears past the completely useless 1-800 number, call 847-286-2500 and ask for Mr. Lampert's office (Ed Lampert is the chairman of the board). When the executive assistance picks up, tell them you want to file an "Executive Complaint." Said the reader who submitted this tip, "A single call to this group is actually well on my way to resolving a problem that 4 calls & 3 transfers at the 1-800-4-my-home line could not handle." <![CDATA[ Get Your Expired Bloomingdale's Gift Card Balance Restored ]]> Pam had a Bloomingdale's gift card that went unused for a couple of years, and when she tried to spend it last weekend, she was told it had expired. Pam found a way to get the balance restored fairly quickly, though. If you've got a card from before February 2008, try Pam's advice below.

This past weekend, I went to Bloomingdales with a gift card that I received two years ago. The salesperson told me it had "expired." I was furious. How could a gift card "expire" after such a short time? How could they take "my" money?

I searched Bloomingdales.com, and learned that gift cards purchased after Feb. 2008 never expire.

That didn't comfort me. Then I sent an email to Customer Service. Lo and behold: they replied with a phone number to call to "restore" the balance in my expired card:

1-866-593-2540

A minute and one phone call later, I have the full $109 back on my card.

It's interesting how no one at the store was willing or able to give me this information — and how there's no directions about it on Bloomingdales.com.

Now he has two options: ditch his long-time number, or lose his cherished anonymity. Inside, Charter's apology letter.

Tim writes:

I thought you might find the attached (redacted) letter of interest. I’ve had an unlisted phone number for over 30 years, but no more. Moreover, although I use a PO box for billing and everything else, this letter was sent to my street address, so that is probably the address that was sold and will be associated with my phone number. The worst of both worlds.

You can't un-ring a bell, but at last Charter seems slightly sorry for the surprise outing. Other than not publishing Tim's number in the first place, how else, if at all, do you think Charter should respond?
