Black Friday can now be anytime, any month.

Dear Petco: If You Insist On Pushing Black Friday In July Promos, At Least Make It An Awesome Deal

If you’re getting an email from Petco trumpeting a “Black Friday In July!” promo that’s only serving to tick you off, you’re not alone. Consumerist readers Matthew and Kelso both forwarded their sighs along with a Petco email that is very, very excited about a not-so-great deal that just serves to make people cranky. Because it’s not Black Friday. It’s just Friday, in July. [More]

Family Wants Petco To Pay After Dog Dislocated Hip During Grooming

When a California woman picked up her daughter’s dog from his grooming appointment, it was obvious that something was wrong. The Shih Tzu was walking on three legs, not putting his right rear paw down on the ground. While the groomer admitted that she had pulled on that leg to get the animal into position to be groomed, nothing else seemed amiss. Or so the store claims. [More]

Forget Christmas: Time To Buy Valentine’s Day Crap

This weekend, two readers sent us very similar “holiday creep” photos from two different kinds of retailers. Secret Consumerist synchronicity? Maybe. Or maybe the week before Christmas is now the universal time to put Valentine’s Day stuff out. [More]

Petco Really Wants Me To Visit My Brand New Local Store… 850 Miles Away

At first, Consumerist reader Steven was pleasantly surprised to get a 10% coupon from the folks at Petco to celebrate the opening of a new store. Then when he saw the address of that particular store he just had to laugh. [More]

Petco Releases Coupon On Internet, Forgets How Internet Works

Petco Releases Coupon On Internet, Forgets How Internet Works

Petco had a really fun promotion this past Saturday. Customers printed out a coupon from the retailer’s site, and scanned it at the checkout. Customers wouldn’t know the total value of their coupon until it was scanned. This sounds really fun, doesn’t it? Only there was a flaw. Only four barcodes for the coupons existed, and customers who clicked on the “mystery” coupon link would receive one of the four. It didn’t take long for customers to figure out which of the codes was for a 50% off coupon and head to Petco to stock up on essentials for their critters. Thus began a very, very bad day to be a Petco employee. [More]

Lawsuit: Petco Dispenses With Veterinarians & Glues Puppy's Ear Back On After Cutting It Off

As my grandpa always said, there’s nothing a little glue can’t fix! Well, a puppy’s ear, actually. Glue can’t fix a puppy’s ear when you cut a piece of it off and return it to the owner, hoping they won’t notice. One woman in Hawaii claims that’s exactly what happened to her pooch during a grooming at Petco. [More]

Watch Out For Petco's Fuzzy Kitty Litter Math

Watch Out For Petco's Fuzzy Kitty Litter Math

Just because something is on sale, even a sale only available to holders of a store’s discount card, that doesn’t mean it’s a good deal. Want a real-life example? Here, the sale price of a container of cat litter is higher than the sale price of a container that’s actually larger. Fuzzy math, or subtle bias against customers who aren’t able to carry a 31-pound box? [More]

Nearly 100 animals died last week at a Johnson City, NY, Petco after flooding filled the store with several feet of water. Dog Dies After Visit To Petco Groomer, Owner Wants Hair Dryer Cages Banned

Sadie, a beloved 6-year-old Lhasa Apso in good health, died in 2008 after a regular grooming session at a California Petco. She became ill while inside a cage dryer, a kennel with an air blower attached (sometimes heated, sometimes not) and was immediately taken for emergency medical care. The veterinarian treating her concluded that the dog died of “severe heatstroke.” But was the heatstroke caused by the actions of Petco’s employees, as her owner’s lawsuit alleges? [More]

Stupid Shipping Gang Thinks Every Dog Treat Needs Separate Box

Dog treats shipped in separate boxes large enough to put a dog inside. A wallpaper border crammed on the edge of a box that could fit five more rolls. And a laundry rack shipped to a FedEx store in a box large enough for its purchaser to climb inside. These are the tales of the Stupid Shipping Gang. [More]

This Just In: Pet Stores Are Ripoffs

This Just In: Pet Stores Are Ripoffs

If there’s something dogs really, really don’t give a feces about, it’s brands. And cleanliness, and newness, and price. Same goes for cats. But keeping your pets happy and healthy is way cheaper than pet stores want you to think. To prove it, and help out, we’ve made this handy chart:

Poll: Do You Write Checks?

And I’m wondering what percentage of people with checking accounts actually carry or write checks anymore (I myself have gotten to the point where I pay all my bills online and use cash or plastic in stores).
