Scammed For Sympathy On The Street

Scammed For Sympathy On The Street

It was a horrible story. A man approached Liza on the street and said that he needed $6 because his mother had just had a stroke behind the wheel of a car and he was short on cash to pay for the tow truck while she was taken to the hospital. It was also a lie. [More]

Judge Tosses Gorilla Coffee's Suit Against NYT For Posting Workers' Walkout Letter

A popular Brooklyn coffee shop’s lawsuit against the New York Times just got chucked. The paper’s City Room blog had reprinted the letter penned by eight employees who simultaneously quit over working conditions, and the owners of Gorilla Coffee felt that the Times’ action was defamatory and an “intentional infliction of emotional distress.” A judge disagreed. Scammer Flips Free Kitties For Profit

A Park Slope woman who gave away her kittens on Craigslist was later shocked and aghast – a common affliction among Park Slope residents – to see the buyer posting an ad trying to sell the very same kittens, even though her ad said that if the buyer wasn’t going to keep the kittens themselves, they were to return them to her. The Best Damn Sandwich Shop In Brooklyn

When Michael Fiore, the earl of sandwich, was building his restaurant, Tempo, he found there was no good sandwich place around. So in the extra space next door, he decided to open his own, to feed his employees and the neighborhood (not a bad marketing strategy either, to offer a down-market version of their high-quality product). The result is Tempo Presto, located at 256 5th Ave in Brooklyn, which brings the same intense attention to detail from Michael’s kitchen to the lowly sandwich. — BEN POPKEN

Make It Nice Or Make It Twice

Make It Nice Or Make It Twice

Two signs, one saying, “Make it nice or… make it twice!” and one saying, “Cooking is an art – be an ARTIST,” adorn the back wall of Tempo Presto! a Park Slope sandwich shop. Right now we’re eating a hot and sweet sopresatta w/ provolone, roasted red peppers & black olive tapanade on rosemary focaccia. It’s delicious.

Time Warner Pays Inexplicable House Call, Consumerist Helps

Dan Edelman, a loyal Consumerist reader, was shocked to hear a Time Warner Cable tech visited his apartment yesterday. Odder than the difficulty in getting one to show up in the first place was that the tech wasn’t asked for. No service call was put in. His cheetos slathered roommate let the guy in without an explanation. The tech puttered around for 20 minutes and left.
