The 8 Largest U.S. Retailers With The Worst Sales
By Chris Morran on August 2, 2011 12:45 PM
If we'd told you 10 years ago that Borders and Circuit City would vanish off the face of the planet and Blockbuster Video would be auctioned off to a satellite TV provider for pocket change, many people would have expressed disbelief. But those once-great stores have had their heyday in history, so now it's time to look into the magic 8 ball to see if doom lies ahead for other major retailers. More »

Office Max Proudly Advertises Their Fuzzy Pricing Math
By Laura Northrup on May 1, 2011 10:00 AM
This fuzzy math that Laurie found at Office Max seems like your everyday pricing error— a stupid sign posted by bored and underpaid worker who doesn't bother to question authority. But look deeper. That sign says "As advertised." That means that Office Max put out a circular or other advertisement bragging that they're selling correction tape for one cent more than they normally do. Grab your coat, honey! We can't possibly miss this once-in-a-lifetime sale! More »

OfficeMax Needs To Get Its Story Straight Before Selling Any More RAM
By Laura Northrup on October 14, 2010 9:30 AM
Daniel writes that a recent experience with OfficeMax taught him an important lesson: don't believe a damn word of what anyone at this particular OfficeMax says. A store employee assured Daniel that he knew what type of RAM was the correct one for his Macbook Pro...and was wrong. When Daniel tried to return the RAM, a manager told him that opened RAM couldn't be returned, but he could dispute the charge with his credit card company...but the chargeback was denied, with OfficeMax claiming that Daniel should have taken the item back to the store. Having A Picture Scanned At OfficeMax Is Like Being On A Game Show
By Chris Walters on December 4, 2009 3:11 PM
Adam and his wife never know what they're going to be charged for scanning services at OfficeMax's ImPress print center. I like to imagine that the ImPress employee stands in front of them holding a very long microphone, and tries to build tension before a coworker flips over the Actual Price card. More »

Office Max Apologizes, Actually Apologizes, For Snooty Manager
By Ben Popken on September 9, 2008 7:47 PM

—>The condescending store-manager, irked that your request for them to fulfill their contractual agreement has forced them away from a high-scoring session of Snood. Long have consumers suffered under his reign of caprice and indifference. No longer. A weakness has been discovered. The EECB, a modern version of "taking it to the top." Jim used it and got not only the rare and magnificent personal apology, but a $30 gift card and he was allowed to make the return he wanted to do in the first place. His story follows.  More »

Office Depot Makes Up Lame Excuse To Weasel Out Of Price Match Guarantee
By Carey Alexander on July 13, 2008 4:00 PM

—>Office Depot didn't want to accept Chaz's OfficeMax coupon for $20 off his $259 printer, so they told him that competitor's coupons didn't apply to technology purchases, which is an utter lie. Office Depot's policy is to accept competitor's coupons, subject only to the terms and conditions of the coupon, a simple concept Office Depot apparently can't understand.  More »

Greg's Office Max Freakout
By Ben Popken on June 5, 2008 5:24 PM

—>This guy on San Fran's "Woody Show" goes into Office Max, twice, and loses his shit after every item he brings up to the counter rings up higher than its shelf-price. Not only does no one seem to care, one employee even insinuates that the complainant might be partially at fault for Office Max's inability to shelve things in the right place. Neither disc jockey, producer, crazed customer, Office Max employees number 1 and 2, nor Office Max Manager seem to realize that if the item is found on the store shelves under a certain price, as long as the description matches the product, the store has to honor the price. It's the law. In addition to a an amusing radio clip and animation, The Woody Show also has material here for a complaint to their state's Attorney General. Video, inside...  More »

By Carey Alexander on May 4, 2008 8:48 PM

—>OfficeMax called Chris a thief for recycling empty printer cartridges. Chris runs a computer repair business that leaves him flush with empty cartridges. According to one cashier, this makes Chris a thief.  More »

OfficeMax Ships Spindle Of CD-Rs Without The Spindle
By Carey Alexander on March 15, 2008 10:41 PM

—>Hey OfficeMax, Bill ordered a spindle of CD-Rs, not a batch of CD-Rs carelessly dumped into a box without the spindle or any protective cushioning. Did you seriously think he wouldn't notice or complain about the pell-mell packing job? Unsurprisingly, the CD-Rs are scratched and ruined. Bill isn't pleased, but he's taking the flub in stride.  More »
