<![CDATA[ 3M Steals Viral Image Idea To Avoid Licensing It ]]> There is probably nothing more pathetic in the world of marketing than watching a big corporation try to do something "viral"—usually they end up looking like Elaine dancing. But sometimes, they're so cynical and soulless about it that they don't just come across as incompetent, but as exploitative cheapskates as well. In 3M's case, they wouldn't pay $2,000 to license a well-known photo with its own viral history, and instead recreated a fake version of it to save a grand. We guess they're just hoping none of the sites and communities that made the photo popular in the first place will notice. Oh wait, this is supposed to be viral or something...

Melanie at All About Content has the entire story, from the original office prank that went viral thanks to sites like Digg and BoingBoing, to 3M's attempt to appropriate it, to their shabby treatment of the owner of the photo and their subsequent workaround.

Michelle, the "eMarketing Supervisor" who was negotiating with Scott, comes across as particuarly disingenuous in her email to him:

We were quoted about $750-$1000 to shoot our own, but if you could allow us to use yours on a couple in-store displays for 6 months within that range, we could arrange for that instead.

Really, Michelle? Only two displays throughout the entire country? Are you a really bad eMarketing manager, or lying to Scott about how much you'd use the photo? [We think mmmsoap makes a good point about how this was probably meant.]

We guess what's most offensive about this is 3M can surely afford to pay a legitimate licensing fee to the owner of the photo, which would have also served as a goodwill gesture to the community that most likely gave it the campaign idea to begin with. As Melanie puts it in her article:

But let’s pretend the legality of this move wasn’t even a question for now, and focus on this: Social media marketing campaigns rely on the social media community to carry them. As a marketer, you have to respect the community and its members. Ripping off community members and then turning around and asking that same community to generate buzz for your campaign is just ballsy... or stupid.

The irony: The YouTube contest rules say “Remember, creativity and true brilliance will get you noticed.”

Is that part of the rules, or a threat from 3M?

Caption: "I had read about this toothpaste in the August issue of National Geographic, and wanted to try it. I thought it'd be easy to find, but after checking out about 10 places that sold toothpaste, I gave up. My aunt called National Geographic in Seoul to track it down and found the toothpaste at a place called Orga Whole Foods about 30 minutes away from metropolitan Seoul in Bundang (?). Bundang!

Charcoal has cleaning and odor-removing properties. That part's great. The toothpaste left my mouth squeaky clean! Good stuff...until charcoal's moisture sucking properties kick in. About five minutes after I brushed my teeth, my mouth was as dry as a desert and my lips were starting to chap. "

<![CDATA[ Video Backlash: The Flickr Users Are Revolting ]]> videokillled.jpg Flickr has added the ability to upload 90 second video clips! Cool, right? Apparently not. A group called "We Say NO to Videos On Flickr" has more than 25,000 members and appears to be going strong. These disgruntled users fear that video will cause the site to slow down and attract the dreaded "YouTube crowd."

Flickr, however, is standing firm. The videos will stay.

Here's our response to what we see as frequent feedback here in the forum (I've paraphrased the feedback in some instances):

"I don't want video on Flickr."
We're sorry, but video is here to stay. We'd love for everyone to give it a shot. If it's not to your taste, then you should change the default on autoplay. You can distinguish between video and photos by the white arrow bottom left.

"I think video should have it's own separate site."
Just as with our international launch last year and building language on top of our global community, we wanted to avoid siloing what is after all, just another format.

"...did none of the staff see this coming?"
Given our experience with the outrage in moving sets from the left-hand side of the page to the right a few years ago (and various adventures since then), we're very familiar with the passionate response of our members. We can't be afraid of that. We need to continue to improve, release new features and iterate.

Feedback and iteration are very much part of our process. We very much value the feedback that we receive after features launch. It gives us a chance to take something good and give it that extra polish.

This response doesn't seem to have calmed the outraged users. They're still tagging all of their photos "no video," threatening to move to another photosharing site (there's another one?), and signing petitions aplenty.

We suppose the real question is: Are they willing to put their memberships where thier mouths are and cancel their accounts in protest?

(Pssst, the headline is a joke. We love you, Flickr.)

<![CDATA[ This Sprint Plan Lets You Talk For 1.9 Years Per Month. What? ]]> BG's Sprint plan lets him talk for 1,000,499 minutes per month and only costs $50. How did he find this stupefyingly amazing plan? Hit the jump for his story.

My two years on my initial Sprint contract was up in January of this year, so I worked through Retention and got them to agree to a plan I was happy with. This included free incoming calls (like I had on my old contract), 300 more minutes of other calls than I had before, and free text messaging. I got them to commit to the same price I was paying before - $50/month.

Naturally, because this is Sprint, my January, February and March bills have all been issued with enough errors to this custom-built plan that I have had to call Billing to get things squared away on each one. Surprisingly, they've been easy to deal with and have processed the fixes for me without any trouble at all.

So, I've grown to expect Sprint to screw up my bill a little bit. A *little* bit. I'm not sure a teenage girl in Prom season could use up all these minutes I was mysteriously granted...

$50 is a reasonable price for 1,000,499 minutes, but you can probably get a better deal by hopping down to the million minute per month plan.
