<![CDATA[ A List Of Starbucks Stores That Will Close By The End Of The Month ]]> Starbucks is releasing the list of the first batch of stores that are getting the axe. These stores will be closing by the end of the month.

Starbucks says:

Much thought and consideration was given to each location, because we know the impact this has on our dedicated partners, customers and the communities where we operate. The determination of each store’s closure date is dependent on several operational and contractual factors and events. We will be as transparent as possible and each month, after closure dates have been communicated to all affected partners, we will post a list of the stores that are scheduled to close during that month.

<![CDATA[ Why Won't Checkers/Rally's Make Their Nutrition Information Available? ]]> When we posted our Ultimate Fast Food Nutrition Guide a few months ago, a couple readers pointed out that Checkers/Rally's, the chrome and neon double drive-thru hamburger joint, has refused to provide nutrition information to customers for years.

Checkers/Rally's, whose fatalistic slogan "You Gotta Eat!" apparently justifies its menu of triple cheeseburger Nascar meals, double Philly cheese steak burgers (that's a double cheeseburger with a cheese steak on top) and thirty-two ounce medium sodas, has over 800 locations across 28 states, more than such chains as Boston Market and Roy Rogers. Unlike most fast food restaurants, which make nutrition information available on their website or in store, Checkers/Rally's is oblivious to such concerns (see picture above). Worse, inquiries by customers have been met with the same canned response:

"Thank you for your interest in the nutritional value of our menu items. We are currently reviewing our nutrition information due to several recent menu changes. We do not have a set date for the release of this information. You can find general information on this topic at www.Nutrition.gov or Food and Nutrition Information Center www.fns.usda.gov/fns or Healthfinder-Gateway to Reliable Consumer Health Information www.healthfinder.gov.
Thank you,
Checkers Drive-In Restaurants"

We emailed the company's PR person and asked why it didn't make this information available, but received no response.
For those wondering if some law requires Checkers/Rally's to make this information available, the answer is, probably not. According to the FDA, restaurants are generally exempt from any requirements to publish nutritional information. The exception to this rule is that whenever a company makes a health claim, such as low calorie, less fat, and so on, they are required to make available nutritional information sufficient to back up this claim. These types of health claims are becoming more common in fast food advertising, but are noticeably absent from Checkers/Rally's; perhaps this is intentional?

<![CDATA[ Burger King Tries To Get Healthy With Mac N' Cheese And Apple Fries ]]> Taking aim at health-conscious mothers, Burger King recently introduced its new "healthy" kids meal, the AP reports. The meal consists of a 4 ounce serving of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, lowfat milk, and "Fresh Apple Fries" all for $3.49. The apple fries are, quite simply, sliced apples cut in the shape of french-fries and served in a french-fry style container. The slices are treated with lemon juice to prevent browning. Also included is a packet of low fat caramel sauce for dipping. The delicious details, inside...

Observe this heavily medicated family enjoying their "healthy" food from Burger King. Hey pops, quit bogarting the mac n' cheese!

If this video is a little dry for you, try watching it while playing this music in background, trust us.

The article says,

The launch will be followed by an in-restaurant merchandising and television ad campaign, with the first commercial airing July 7. That spot will introduce "Little King" meant to be the masked king's young son.

The company will be offering free samples of its apple fries through July in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami and Houston. Burger King will also give away samples at Jonas Brothers concert tour sites. Burger King is an official sponsor of the group's "Burning Up Tour" and will be offering some free tickets to the concerts.

Burger King certainly isn't the first fast food restaurant to try to convince moms to listen to the pleas in the backseat for fast food. McDonald's launched a public relations campaign targeted to mothers last year in a bid to neutralize criticism that the company's food is a contributor to childhood obesity.

We suppose, if there is no other available source of food and you are trying to get your family to eat healthy, this seems like a viable option, but we certainly don't see anyone making a special trip because they are jonesing for apple fries. And if your kid has already been exposed to the artery-closing goodness of a Whopper with cheese and french-fries (or onion rings) and a Coke, there's little chance they are going to be pacified by a miniature cup of mac n' cheese and a bottle of milk.

<![CDATA[ Why Won't Krystal Respond To Their Customers? ]]> Hey! Krystal! Are you there?! Reader Josh sent two letter complaining about his local burger franchise and hasn't heard a peep in response. Not even "we're taking it seriously" or "your opinion is important to us." Nothing!

Josh writes:

Hi guys...

My name is Josh, and a friend of mine suggested that I might come to you guys for some help. I've kind of engaged in some letter writing to the Krystal corporation all thanks to the restaurant down the road, and I seem to be being ignored. It's weird; I don't actually want anything from Krystal - all I want is an apology, or even an acknowledgment that someone's bothering to read the complaint letter department. Anyways, I've written about it on my own blog, and he suggested I might try you guys. So here goes nothing.

I live in Donelson, Tennessee (a suburb of Nashville), right down the street from a Krystal. I love Krystals - for those of you not from the South, they're very similar to White Castle burgers. Anyways, the Krystal down the street from me is pretty incompetent. Really, really incompetent. To the point where I finally did something I'd never done in my life, and I wrote a letter. Went to their website, found the complaint form, and wrote the following:

To whom it may concern:

I genuinely feel that you may be missing out on a magnificent opportunity to get some press for your Krystal restaurant in Donelson, Tennessee. It is rare that you see a fast food franchise attempt to take on such a massive challenge as this one, and even rarer to find them succeeding.

You see, there is an old phrase, "Even a broken clock is right twice a day." The idea is to show that every person or organization, no matter how incompetent, how wrong-headed, is not wrong 100% of the time. It's a noble, optimistic saying.

Your Donelson Krystal restaurant has taken on the considerable challenge of proving this saying wrong, and they seem to be succeeding (so to speak) magnificently. Of my last five trips to this Krystal, all but one of them have necessitated me returning to the store to fix my order. This is an impressive accomplishment. I have worked fast food, so I know that while mistakes are made, they are not as common as people feel, and most of the time they are the results of inattention or rushes. Yet, your fine employees have managed to bungle my orders at all times of the day, in any number of variations, no matter how busy or not they may be.

Adding to their style is the ridiculously slow speed with which they manage to bungle my orders. You would think that a restaurant so dedicated to such blunders would at least do so quickly, to have the pretext of being in a rush to keep the customers happy. However, this Krystal manages to take an eternity for even the simplest orders, rendering me not only late for whatever I was doing, but doubly late because I now have to go and get my order corrected.

You are thinking to yourself, "Surely this must be because your order is so complicated. Surely no restaurant could mangle orders so constantly unless they were complicated." But no. This Krystal manages to even make a mockery of a request for plain burgers. That's right. To get these orders right, all they have to do is to do nothing. And they still get it wrong. What commitment to their goal!

But to focus on their inability to follow simple directions is to sell the staff of this fine establishment far short. How could we not discuss their rude natures, their incivility, their lack of sympathy? On precisely no occasions that I have had to drive back from my house to correct my orders has anyone apologized, offered me a discount, or even asked if I wanted my drinks filled. Instead, I am greeted with withering stares and disdain, as if I am imposing by requesting that the food I paid for be correct. Especially with gas prices rapidly climbing, most people would succumb to regret or contrition, knowing that they have effectively raised the price of my meal by a decent percentage by making me waste gas. And yet your sterling staff crushes these human weaknesses, ignoring me for as long as possible before begrudgingly giving me what I asked for in the first place.

There are so, so many more issues I could discuss about this store. Could I discuss the time that they only had two employees at the store, but told no one, so the drive thru backed into the street, and people who walked in were greeted by a cook who politely inquired, "What do you want?" while rolling eyes? Or when a manager yelled obscenities at employees while coming in through the front door? Or their mysterious tendency to never have receipt paper, meaning that we have no way of confirming orders or what we paid?

But here is the most simple way to illustrate the impact this store has had on me: they have made me feel as though it is my job to check my order before I leave the store. Imagine being so successful at your incompetence that you have successfully made your customers feel that they are to blame for your mistakes, and that they bear the responsibility of making sure they get what they are asking for.

In the end, I am unsure if your restaurant is a massively successful performance art installation designed to prove how truly miserable a fast food experience could be. If so, bravo, good sirs. If not, then I can only applaud your employees and staff at their incredible incompetence, inhumanity, and miraculous consistency of ineptitude. Clearly they are wasted here; they should have themselves positions in the federal government. I think would fit in perfectly with the good people at FEMA, no doubt.

In conclusion, I find myself wondering tonight why I continue to frequent this Krystal. Yes, I love the food. Yes, it is close to my house. But with such incredible incompetence on display, you would think that I would have learned to stay away. Maybe I finally am.

Sincerely,

Josh

Now, that was on May 18th. I got nothing as a result of this letter. Not an acknowledgment, not even an automated "We thank you for writing to us" letter. I don't really want anything back; all I would like is some sort of comment that a) they listen to compaints and b) would like to apologize for how I was treated.

But nothing.

Now, this past Sunday, my wife ended up stopping at Krystal to pick me up some dinner. The resulting drive-thru trip took 30 minutes, over which period of time...well, here's the next letter I wrote.

To whom it may concern:

I have complained about the Donelson branch of Krystal twice in the past, and been ignored. I would have thought that a long, detailed letter expressing irritation at your restaurant would have been responded to, but apparently not. Perhaps it's because my letter was long. Here's a simple version of tonight's events for your apparently simple minds.

1. When we tried to order dinner, we were told that the restaurant had run out of fries. Then it turned out that they hadn't really - he just hadn't checked.

2. AFTER ordering, AFTER paying, my wife was told that it would take 7-9 minutes to get food. She was thus stuck in her car with a fussy child for ten minutes, rather than getting the quick dinner we were hoping for. And ten minutes for Krystals? RIDICULOUS.

3. Finally, they brought the Krystals, but told my wife that their heat lamp has broken. Did I still want cold fries?

4. We asked for our money back. SO THEY TOOK THE FOOD BACK WITH THEM.

5. There was no apology, no explanation.

6. It took FIFTEEN minutes to process a refund.

7. The manager chose to YELL at my wife for being interested in what was taking so long for the refund. His exact words were, "Bear with me. I'm working on it."

8. He STILL did not apologize.

9. We were there for THIRTY minutes. We received no apology whatsoever.

10. We gave up on getting our money back. We finally got our food again and left. But, they lost the receipt and had to find it.

To give the devil his due, there was a single employee who was kind and understanding to my wife during all of this. Although he did not apologize, he did give my wife a pack of cookies, telling her, "Give this to the little one for having to wait."

This is inexcusable, offensive, and disrespectful. This has managed to do what no amount of health talk or bad experience has done before - I will not return to a Krystal restaurant again until I have received either an apology, an explanation, or I have been assured that your entire moronic, pathetic staff at this restaurant has been replaced by someone more intelligent and sympathetic, like a dog or a cardboard box. I have eaten Krystal since I was a young boy, and I will miss it and the considerable amount of business I have done there, but I am sick of being treated with disrespect, disdain, and contempt by your corporation.

This time, I sent it through the complaint form, the question form, the suggestion form, AND the compliment form, just in the hopes of being read.

Nothing.

Look - I don't want much. All I want is an apology, someone to say "Hey, maybe we shouldn't treat our customers this way." But I have gotten nothing, and I would have thought that my wife being YELLED AT by the manager might have merited such. But no.

It just seems to me that it's disingenuous to have a complaint and feedback form if you're going to ignore it.

Do I have a valid issue? Or do I need to just let it go?

Josh is clearly passionate about his concerns, and while he invested more time pursuing his complaint than we would recommend, it's not unreasonable for him to expect some response.

C'mon Krystal, showing up is half the battle. Take a minute and crank out a form letter.

<![CDATA[ UPDATE: Arby's Responds To Roast Beef Confetti Query ]]> A few days ago, we told you about Mark's Arby's Roast Beef sandwich which was made with beef-confetti rather than the slices of beef which are normally served. Mark fired off a letter to Arby's and actually received a reply. In case you were losing sleep thinking about how such an enigmatic sandwich came to be, Arby's supplies an explanation. Original not-safe-for-lunch photo and Arby's response, inside...

Mark writes,

I sent in a complaint through the Arby's website and, shockingly, I got a really great, and fast, response. This may actually get me to eat at Arby's more than once every other month...

Well... Maybe not.

Response below:

—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-——

Mark,

I want to apologize for the product you received at the Arby's on San Mateo location. I just spoke to the manager and supervisor in charge of this location and informed me they had a mechanical issue with the slicer. They should have explained to you they were having an issue with this piece of equipment. We now have another slicer that is working. I know this is not an excuse for providing this type of product, however I am be putting a couple of free meals in the mail as I am writing this email.

Again, I do apologize and we have taken care of this equipment issue. I hope you will return.

Sincerely,

Gary Chaves

Vice President – Operations

Never having operated a commercial meat slicer it's difficult to gauge the validity of this explanation which really leaves more questions than answers. How does a slicer go from "slice" to "puree?" Then again, maybe we don't want to know the awful truth behind the beef-confetti.

<![CDATA[ Arby's Roast Beef Sandwich, Now With Beef Confetti? ]]> UPDATE: Arby's Responds To Roast Beef Confetti Query
Reader Mark writes,

So this was a new one for me. I went through an Arby's Drive-Thru for lunch today and ordered a large roast beef sandwich. When I got back to the office and opened it up, I was a little weirded out by what I saw. It looks like the bits and chunks that fall off the roat beef as it gets sliced up.

Not very appetizing.

Our photographic comparison, inside...

Our limited Arby's experience tells us that the roast beef should resemble the beef in the sandwiches below which we found in our Flickr pool. Obviously, they are not professional images for an advertisement.

We would be inclined to agree with you, Mark, it does look like the debris from the meat slicer. We're not so hot on eating debris either. What gives, Arby's? And please don't blame it on high gasoline prices.

<![CDATA[ Burger King To Offer $185 Burger Made With Wagyu Beef And Cristal Champagne ]]>
Yes, this is another installment in our continuing coverage of how "American" fast food is eaten in other countries. In our last episode you met the "Angus 6-pack" a giant burger meant to be pulled apart into smaller burgers. Today Burger King would like to introduce you to "The Burger." It's their attempt to enter the Guinness Book of World records for the most expensive burger. Yawn. Here's where it gets more fun: The Telegraph asked some people on the street to sample the burger and tell them if it was worth $185 (£95.)

In case you were wondering why it costs $185, the burger is contains wagyu beef, white truffles, a saffron sprinkled bun and tempura onions prepared in Cristal champagne. Enjoy.

<![CDATA[ Man Loses 86 lbs Eating 1,200-1,400 Calories Per Day Of McDonald's Food ]]> Chris Coleson, a businessman from Richmond, VA told his wife he could lose weight by eating anywhere — even McDonald's.

"I told her I could lose weight eating anywhere," he said. "I told her I could do it eating at McDonald's."

So he did. By eating two meals a day (and only two meals) consisting of "wraps, apple-walnut salads and the occasional cheeseburger" Chris has lost 86 lbs since December.

Coleson told AdAge that he's not interested in being the next "Jared," but would like to encourage McDonald's to build playgrounds where parents with disabilities can play with their children.

"I wasn't disabled when I weighed 300 pounds, but it made me think about parents who are," said Mr. Coleson. He currently "works closely with his local YMCA and the Wounded Warrior Project, which provides services to disabled veterans," says AdAge.

<![CDATA[ McDonald's Remote Ordering System Is Gaining Popularity ]]> In 2006 we reported that McDonald's was testing a system in which drive-thru orders were being taken by employees at a remote location, usually in another state altogether. Nearly 2 years later, the system has proven successful in some areas and is being used in over half of the McDonald's in Hawaii, according to KITV. Apparently, the system enhances the speed and accuracy of orders and most customers don't even realize the difference. More, inside...

The article says,

McDonald's began trying the idea four years ago in Illinois and Missouri. Out-sourcing drive-through order workers began in Hawaii two years ago. Recently it has expanded.

KITV went to one drive-through Wednesday and found the company is still working out the kinks. At the Keeaumoku Street McDonald's, the people taking drive-through orders were in another time zone. "I am currently talking to you from El Paso, Texas, sir," the drive-through operator said.

KITV asked the Texas call-takers if they are having a difficult time understanding people from Hawaii. "We've been out here for about seven months, so it kind of takes me a while just to understand," the worker said.

The long-distance call-takers send back the orders to the restaurant via the Internet. There the restaurant employees take the cash and hand over the food.

We suppose that fast food is meant to be fast, so if the system works then why not? Who hasn't been to a drive-thru that could have benefited from a little more speed and accuracy?

<![CDATA[ Attention Hungry Insomniacs: Burger King Will Now Stay Open Until 2 AM ]]> You know how Burger King is always closed and you have to go to Taco Bell? And you don't even like Taco Bell? No more. Burger King has announced that it will be staying open until 2 am.

"Further extending our late-night hours allows us to meet strong consumer demand and deliver on the ‘Have It Your Way' brand promise," said Russ Klein, president-global strategy, marketing and innovation at Burger King, Miami, in a statement.

To promote the new closing time, the fast-food chain will launch a TV spot, directed by Spike Lee. It will feature entertainment mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs, who has been recruited as the brand's "Late Night Ambassador."

Combs seems to be taking his new "job" seriously:

"Everyone knows I own the night," said Combs, in a statement. "As 'Late Night Ambassador,' it's my goal to get everyone involved, whether they're leaving a club, concert or studio session. BK is the only place that does late-night right."

Does this mean BK is going to start serving raccoon dog meat now?

<![CDATA[ Consumerist's Ultimate Fast Food Nutrition Guide: 2008 ]]> Back in January of 2007, we took a look at fast food and chain restaurant websites to see who was hiding their nutritional information and who was making it easy for consumers to find out what was in their favorite menu items. We found that some chains were offering a veritable buffet of information, while others either ignored the subject altogether or hid links to PDFs in the depths of their fine print. Because of this, inside, we've got a nutritional info report card of about 50 top fast food joints. We tell you whether they have the info online at all, provide nutritional info for all items, if it's easy to locate, and whether they have allergen info. We also give an overall rating to the overall quality of the nutritional info, and provide direct links to the nutrition page or PDF.

In the year that's passed since our original post, there's been quite a bit of controversy over nutrition information — city and state governments have tried (with varying degrees of success) to pass regulations that would require fast food and chain restaurants alike to post nutritional information where customers would see it while ordering. When New York City passed a law forcing restaurants who already provided nutritional information to post calorie info on menus, some restaurants pulled their nutritional information from their websites rather than be forced to disclose it on the menu. Now that the dust has finally settled (NYC's original law was overturned and they passed a new one that required chains with more than 15 locations to post calorie information on menu boards), we decided to take a look at fast food and chain restaurant websites to see what, if any, effect the scuffle had on the availability of nutritional information.

We have good news. More restaurants are posting nutrition and allergen information than a year ago, and the information is featured more prominently on restaurant websites. There are a few exceptions, of course. A few restaurants have taken a step backwards or are treading water. Chains like Red Lobster, Applebee's and Olive Garden are notoriously unwilling to divulge too much information. Outback Steakhouse is full of suggestions on how to order healthier versions of their menu items, but that's about it. Quiznos has a list of low calorie menu items, but when you compare their information to Subway's website with its extensive nutrition section... well, you get the idea. For the most part, however, nutrition and allergen information is getting top billing on fast food websites, and that's a step in the right direction.

So without further ado:

<![CDATA[ Subliminal Advertising: KFC Wants You To Think There's Money In Your Sandwich ]]> Subliminal messages in advertising has been a controversial topic for years. Is it underhanded? Does it even work? Reader "umlaut75" sent us a video of a KFC Snacker television commercial that shows a mysterious tiny picture of a dollar bill mixed in with the lettuce. As far as intrigue is concerned, it's not exactly the Zapruder film but it does make us wonder. The video, inside...

At approximately 30 seconds in:

Most people seem to consider the effects of subliminal advertising negligible at best. For one thing, the guy "discovered" it actually made the whole thing up as a gimmick to get more business for his marketing research company. However, according to Wikipedia, "A study conducted by the United Nations concluded that "the cultural implications of subliminal indoctrination is a major threat to human rights throughout the world." Do you think there is a threat? Could it be possible?

<![CDATA[ Pizza Hut And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day ]]> Reader Chris write in to let us know that even though his local Pizza Hut was having a really, really bad day (car accidents, miscommunication, messed up refunds) they went out of their way to try to make it up to him.

Here's Chris' letter:

Tonight I was running a little short on time when I got home from work so I decided to order a pizza from my local Pizza Hut online. As always I printed my receipt number and noted the estimated time for delivery: one hour - a little long but I figured it was worth the wait while I could catch up on some other business. One hour rolled around and I was starting to find it difficult to hear myself think over my rumbling guts. When the clock hit an hour and ten minutes I was started to get annoyed, I got up to get the receipt number and prepared myself for an epic journey into the sixth circle of call centre hell when the phone rang. It was the local Pizza Hut calling to inform me that they were really sorry that my order was late and that the driver had had an accident. They said they would be making a fresh pizza and sending it as soon as possible with another driver - no charge. I don't know if anyone was hurt in the accident but I felt instantly like a heel for not only caring so much about my pizza but for getting ready to call the place and give them a serving just as they were dialing me up to try to make sure I was a happy customer.

Chris
Update:

Simon from Pizza Hut called again, just before the fresh pizza arrived, and advised me that because I paid with my credit card he had some type of difficulty reversing the charges (?) but he insisted that I ask the driver to give me a cash refund when he arrived and left his own number for me to call while the driver was still there if I had any problems getting the cash. When the driver did arrive he climbed our three flights of stairs and breathlessly offered the pizza and said "Sorry" and "No charge." I could tell he'd had a rough night and asked if everybody was okay, which he said they were. I didn't ask for the cash because I figured he had a rough night anyway and I thought I'll let it be his tip when he gets back and finds out the cash was up for grabs. My bad.

An hour or so later, as I finished up my pizza there was another knock on the door. It was the driver again. He had gone back to Pizza Hut and been told that he was supposed to give me a cash refund and was sent back to my place again, cash in hand, He had again scaled the three flights of stairs and was breathlessly apologizing again. I made it quite clear this time that I insisted they keep the payment, which I assume he will pocket as a tip.

Anyway, I must say that this Pizza Hut definitely went way out of their way to keep me happy and I will definitely be giving this driver a nice tip the next time he climbs our stairs.

Chris

That poor pizza guy! What crappy day he was having. Giving him the money was a nice thing to do, even if he had to drive to your house over and over again to get it.

<![CDATA[ Does That Chain Restaurant Or Fast Food Match The Nutritional Information? Apparently Not. ]]>

TV stations all over the country recently got together and tested a bunch of dishes from chain restaurants and fast food places to see if the nutritional information they were advertising actually matched the food. The report targeted menu options from chains such as Applebee's, Macaroni Grill, Taco Bell and Chili's that were marketed as healthy. So did the calories in the food match the calories on the menu? Nope. Of the items tested, all but one were way over on calories, or fat content... or both.

For example, the Pollo Magro Skinny Chicken from Macaroni Grill was supposed to have 500 calories and 6 g of fat. It actually had 1022 calories and 49 g of fat. (This total includes the bread and huge vat of cheese that comes on the side) Chili's Guiltless Grill Salmon claimed to have 480 calories and 14 g of fat when it actually contained 664 calories and 35.5 g of fat. Taco Bell's Fresco Grilled Steak Soft Taco is billed as having 160 calories and 4.5 g of fat. Watch out if you plan on eating a few of these, because the sample they tested contained 297 calories and 19.6 g of fat.

You can see the rest of the results here.

<![CDATA[ Burger King To Offer Huge Burger Meant To Feed 6 People? ]]> Continuing our occasional coverage of strange foods that US companies offer in other parts of the world (Cucumber Pepsi? Strawberry Cheetos?) meet the "coming soon" Burger King 6-pack.

UK business site Brand Republic says:

The 6 Pack, which costs £4.49 on its own or £5.69 as part of a meal, comprises one big Aberdeen Angus patty inside six rolls, stuck together to allow consumers to tear off portions. In one pair of rolls the burger is topped with ketchup, the second has a cheese topping, and the third bacon and cheese.

Supposedly, this item is going to help BK compete with "pizza." Why not just offer 6 little burgers? Who wants to tear apart a giant patty? Can this be real? Our head hurts. Would you eat this?

<![CDATA[ Louisiana Sonic Employees Spat In Drinks ]]>

A representative for a Sonic restaurant in Eunice, Louisiana has admitted that two of their employees were spitting in customers' drinks. "It was brought to my attention by the manager of the store that the incident was brought to his attention that an employee had spit in a drink of a customer," said the rep. Oh, good. So long as something was brought to someone's attention.

Several customers at the restaurant said their drinks were spiked with saliva.

"(My daughter) came up here and got a soda and come to find out some girls spit in the drink" father Joe Lawrence said.

A Sonic representative told KFLY-TV that the incident has been investigated and action has been taken.

How can you tell if someone spit in your cherry lime? Beats us. It might be best to just request no spit the next time your order from the Eunice Sonic.

<![CDATA[ McDonalds Wants To Feed You Fried Chicken For Breakfast ]]> It's morning in America and McDonald's is pretty sure you want to eat fried chicken on a biscuit. The Chicago Tribune is reporting that McDonald's has seen so much cash from their chicken menu items that they're adding some to the breakfast menu. Get ready to sink your teeth into the Southern Style Chicken Biscuit and the Southern Style Chicken Sandwhich. Chicken sandwich experts (or whatever) accuse McDonald's of copying Chic-Fil-A which apparently has been offering a chicken breakfast biscuit since 1986.

From the Chicago Tribune:

McDonald's Southern-style items are simple affairs. The sandwich, which has a suggested retail price of $2.89, comes on plain steamed bun, with butter and two pickles its sole condiments. The biscuit, which goes for $1.89, comes adorned only with butter.

Both arrived in stores nationwide within the past two weeks, and a national ad campaign began last week. On Thursday, customers who buy any medium or large drink at McDonald's 14,000 U.S. restaurants can receive a free Southern-style sandwich or breakfast biscuit.

In the South, chicken for breakfast has long been popular, as have simple-but-hearty fried chicken sandwiches like Chick-fil-A's, said West of Stifel Nicolaus. "People in the South love this stuff. The wild card is, will this do as well in the North, in Chicago or Michigan?"

McDonald's says it has extensively tested its Southern-style items in the North, as well as the South, and that both went over well. For those who think chicken for breakfast might sound bizarre, McDonald's Thoma pointed to the McGriddle.

Launched in 2003, the McGriddle—eggs and/or meat sandwiched between two pancakes—was seen by some as bizarre, he sa
