Shipping Is Getting Expensive

Emily noticed that the weird puppet crap she was thinking of buying on Ebay would make her PayPal account explode:
I know shipping products can be expensive, what with the rising fuel costs and all, but this shipping charge from the UK to Utah is ridiculous! Maybe the seller's just padding the fee, I don't know. :)

Latest ACSI Survey Is Out: You Really Like Dollar General

The American Customer Satisfaction Index has released its latest scores of retail businesses, so we thought we'd take a look at the department store rankings by constructing a handy graph. When it comes to customer satisfaction, apparently Dollar General is doing something right—and Wal-Mart, as usual, is doing lots of things wrong. More »

Pokemon Valentine's Day Lollipops Should Not Contain Razor Blades

A 10-year-old elementary school student found a razor blade in the Pokemon lollipop he was about to hand to his sister. Dollar General, which sold the lollipop for $1, immediately recalled the remaining Pokemon Valentine Cards and Pops from its 8,300 stores, but they are concerned that "most of this candy has already been purchased." Stores In NYC Start Accepting Euros

The dollar just isn't what it used to be, ya know? "Euros accepted" signs are popping up all over NYC as shopkeepers (for one) welcome our new tourist overlords:
"We had decided that money is money and we'll take it and just do the exchange whenever we can with our bank," Robert Chu, owner of East Village Wines, told Reuters television.
...
"We didn't realize we would take so much in and there were that many people traveling or having euros to bring in. But some days, you'd be surprised at how many euros you get," Chu said.

Dollar Rent A Car Charges $2.00 "Top Off Fee," Even If You Return With A Full Tank Of Gas

No longer content gouging customers who return their rentals with less than a full tank of gas, Dollar Rent A Car is now assessing a $2.00 "top off fee" for cars that have already been topped off.
"I couldn't believe it," said Steven Dentali, who was charged the fee in October after renting a car from Dollar Rent A Car in Manchester, N.H. "I said to them, 'You're telling me I'm penalized no matter what? There's no way around me having to pay something?'"

Chew Toy Kills Reader's Dog

LeAnn writes:

On Friday, November 16, 2007, my dog, Catfish, died. Catfish died from ingesting a toy I bought her from the Dollar Tree. This was a dog toy by "Paws N Claws", called a "Chase and Fetch Chew Toy". It was a plastic boomerang distributed by Greenbrier International Inc. from Chesapeake, Virginia.

Here is an account of how things happened...

Why Do You Hate The Dollar Coin?

Our beloved U.S. Mint has apparently redesigned the dollar coin to feature a rotating slate of Presidents. Each President gets a three-month stint on the coin. On Thursday, James Madison, our 4th Chief Executive, took his rightful place on the golden slab - but nobody seemed to care. Why? More »

Make Sure You Know What You're Doing Before You Invest In Gold

A lot of financial advisors have suggested investing in gold lately, since the U.S. economy seems headed for the crapper and gold tends to increase in value as the dollar plummets. And a lot of people seem to be following that advice, because gold is up above $750 an ounce now, "its highest level since 1980," says SmartMoney. But gold investments can change value quickly and can be even more difficult to predict than regular investments, so don't go all Scrooge McDuck on the gold hoarding. More »

Beware Bank Check Fraud

Postal inspectors seized more than $2 billion in fake checks this year, which means people need to go to FakeChecks.org and watch their videos (they have several amusing warning videos, and then a few sad victim interviews, like the one above) to learn more about advance fee scams. Basically, anytime in any shape or form someone sends you a check for more than it's supposed to be and asks you to send the difference to someone else, you're getting scammed. Within days or weeks, that check will turn out to be bad. By law, the depositor is the one responsible when depositing a faked check.
