After taking a road trip in Maine, Peter and his wife were charged more than $1,000 for an 8-day rental — more than twice the rate they agreed to — having been dinged for 40 cents a mile. Peter said patience and persistence helped him to get National to honor the unlimited mileage deal he signed up for.

On his blog Bible Money Matters he writes:

After going back and forth for what seemed like an eternity (10 minutes?), the desk agent's supervisor came out. We explained our situation again, and how it would make no sense for us to rent a car for a long trip without having unlimited free mileage (like we signed up for). It must have been an issue with the rental agency's computer system not noting our complete deal?

After talking with the supervisor for another 10 minutes, showing her the paperwork that we still had, and explaining what contract code we were using, she was able to confirm that the deal we had signed up for was legit. To her credit, and to National Car Rental's credit, she apologized for the problem, and found a way to write up the transaction that allowed us to pay what we had signed up for from the start.

It's wise to read car rental contracts closely before you hit the road, then examine charges on your bill when you return the car. Peter seems to have made the right play by neither flipping out and causing a scene nor paying the ridiculous bill and hoping to get his money back afterward.

Does anyone have any comparable rental car horror stories or near misses?

<![CDATA[ Walmart Wants You To Buy All Your Turkey And TV From Them This Year ]]> Walmart is ramping up the price war on another front. Instead of hardcovers, this time the retailer is cutting prices on turkey and flat-panel TVs, reports Bloomberg.

Will this force Best Buy and Amazon, among others, to lower their TV prices? If you've been saving up for a new TV, this might be a fun season to comparison shop.

"This is the proven and effective method they deploy using major categories to drive loyalty and to take marginal sales away from the competition," Richard Hastings, a Charlotte, North Carolina-based consumer strategist for Global Hunter Securities LLC, said in an e-mail. The strategy may force others to lower prices, he said.

<![CDATA[ Give Amazon $80, Get Video Games And $40 Credit ]]> If you have $80 and a lust for video games, Amazon has a deal for you, which was spotted by Joystiq. Spend the money on pre-selected video games and you get a $40 credit.

You'd think the deal would be a clearance mechanism to get rid of crap games, but not so. Some of the titles eligible are the murderer's row of The Beatles: Rock Band, Batman: Arkham Asylum and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, all of which are spectacular.

Of course, you have to take into account the fact that most new video games are ludicrously overpriced, and even the bestsellers are known to drop significantly in price less than a year after they're released. If you're an enterprising sort, you could buy some games, sell them online for about the same price and pocket the $40 credit as profit.

<![CDATA[ 2007 Called With A Pretty Good 'Rock Band' Offer ]]> Maybe excitement around the Rock Band video game has faded, but if you were one of the holdouts who were always jealous of friends who brought the game home a couple years back, now is the time to have your latent wishes fulfilled.

Kotaku spotted a snazzy deal in which you get Rock Band 1 and 2, a guitar and drums for $80, shipping included.

Granted, your friends who probably tired of the game after a few months probably would have sold you all their Rock Band gear for $50 just to get the closet space back, but it's never too late to get into a dated fad. Now, to track down that HyperColor shirt my parents wouldn't buy me in 1992.

<![CDATA[ Walmart Now Offering New Hardcovers For $9 ]]> Walmart just tried to undercut Amazon on, of all things, books. They've announced that they're now selling the "top 10 pre-selling books" for $9 each, with free home delivery. Amazon has responded by dropping its price to $9 on the same titles, but their free shipping doesn't kick in until you buy $25 worth of merchandise (or pay the annual fee for Amazon Prime). Price war!

Walmart is also now selling over 200 current best-sellers at at least half off the list price.

We randomly picked a best seller from the list—A Touch of Dead by Charlaine Harris—and compared prices, and Walmart was cheaper at $11.50 versus Amazon's $13.47. With shipping, Walmart's total price comes out to $13.47, exactly the same as Amazon's price before any shipping costs are figured in.

As we wrote above, if you have Amazon Prime or bundle the book with other merch to hit the $25 free shipping mark, Walmart loses the price war. Still, it's a pretty competitive offering, and we assume it will appeal to people who are already shopping on Walmart's site.

Publishers and authors have been upset at Amazon's $10 price point for new ebooks ever since the Kindle store launched, because they worry that it's training consumers to expect an unrealistically low price that will never be profitable in the real marketplace—that is, in a world where Amazon and Walmart aren't using books as loss leaders. Smaller booksellers can't begin to compete on pricing, of course, so if you value your local non-chain bookstore you might want to keep giving them your business. For the rest of us, as long as the big retailers keep eating the costs of such steep discounts, it's a great time to buy books. Or at least, new releases and top selling titles.

<![CDATA[ Need A New Car? Consider A Saturn ]]> The Washington Post notes that although Saturn dealerships have until this time next year to close, many will be saying goodbye sooner due to low inventory, and that's partly why now is a good time to buy a Saturn. That is, if you don't plan on reselling it in a couple of years.

According to TrueCar, an automotive-data company that tracks prices, the average transaction prices for Saturn's most popular models are within a few hundred dollars of invoice. The average discount from sticker price is close to $1,000 on these models. And more incentives are likely soon.

GM will honor the warranty on any Saturn after the brand has passed. Vehicles will be serviced by Saturn dealerships until they close and afterward by other GM dealerships.

The biggest drawback, they note, is that the resale value may drop faster than other cars the same age: "If you're likely to trade in your car two to three years from now, buying a Saturn isn't the deal for you."

Yesterday a rumor leaked that the cable giant is negotiating to buy 51% of NBC Universal, which includes the movie studio Universal, Universal theme parks, the NBC network, and shows like 30 Rock and SNL.

Under the arrangement being discussed, NBC Universal would be spun off into a standalone company, with Comcast owning 51% and GE holding 49%. There will be a window of opportunity for new ownership between mid-November and mid-December, when France's Vivendi, which presently has 20% of NBC, has an option to sell up.

<![CDATA[ Best Buy Will Bribe Customers To Keep Their New Fat PS3s ]]> The PS3 Slim is hitting stores next week, or even sooner at some stores, so it's natural that recent buyers of older-model, fatter, more expensive PS3s will be returning their consoles en masse.

To stem off the return carnage, Best Buy is getting proactive by offering gamers a sweet deal to accept their new/old PS3 for what it is. According to an store memo attained by Kotaku, Best Buy will price match the old console and give customers a free game (Infamous, MLB 09 The Show or Killzone 2) if they keep their PS3 Fats.

Kotaku reports:

It's important to note that this isn't an advertised sale, it's an internal memo. So it may be up to the store manager's discretion how often to offer the deal. I'd also assume that this would only hold for Playstation 3's purchased within the past 30 days and with a valid receipt.

Are any of you recent PS3 buyers who will take Best Buy up on the deal? Or would you rather go for the Slim's larger hard drive and sleeker form factor? Those who are into the deal should get out there soon and buy a big-boned PS3 before the Slims hit shelves.

<![CDATA[ JetBlue's $599 Unlimited Travel Pass: Great Deal Or Great Gimmick? ]]> Are you planning a vacation that involves spending large expanses of time waiting around in airports? Good news! JetBlue's new unlimited travel pass may be for you! For only $599, you can fly as many times as you'd like between the cities that JetBlue serves.

What's the inevitable catch?

...Ray Neidl, an independent airline analyst, said it's "not quite as crazy as it sounds on the surface."

He said that JetBlue has a limited number of routes and often has fares of $99. So, while the San Francisco example above makes it sound like a great deal, Neidl said, some passengers might need to make six trips to make it worthwhile.

"There are not a lot of people who can travel that much," he said. "It's students or retirees."

By September, of course, students are back in school, so they aren't ideal candidates for this promotion. You just know that someone is going to find a way to fly to all of the cities JetBlue serves using the pass during the promotion month, and write a blog about it.

<![CDATA[ Have Your Way With Blockbuster For $10 A Week ]]> Looking for a way to stop the hemorrhaging, Blockbuster is offering a clever little promotion to lure mega-movie geeks back into its dusty aisles for one more fling. The Summer Escape Pass offers all-you-can watch for $10 a week.

The offer, which restricts you to one rental at a time, is good through Sept. 7. If I didn't have 40 Netflix instant-watch flicks waiting for me on my Xbox 360, if my DVR wasn't filled with unwatched Family Guys, Simpsons and South Parks and if I didn't have Flight of the Conchords season two preordered on Amazon I might just take Blockbuster up on the deal.

But I won't. And neither will anyone else who keeps current with home entertainment technology, which is sort of why Blockbuster is screwed to begin with. But it would be fun to take a long weekend to go on a nonstop movie binge. In a nostalgic 1998 style.

<![CDATA[ Sorry, We Ran Out Of Free Tote Bags...Buy Some Wine Instead ]]> Pacific Rim's experience with their totebag giveaway should serve as a cautionary tale to any company that wants to put up a nice, limited-scale offer of free stuff online.

Pacific Rim gave away "Save Water/Drink Riesling" cloth totebags for free on their Web site. The deal went viral, and was featured on Buxr and, yes, even on Consumerist's very own Morning Deals on June 1st. The company didn't quite expect what happened next—they received 80,000 requests for the 3,000 tote bags they had planned to give away. Oops. Their system wasn't even set up to cut off the deal after 3,000 requests.

They sent an e-mail out to the last 77,000 people to sign up for the freebie, and added—what the heck?—a sales pitch for their wines. Hey, as long as they've got thousands of extra people on the mailing list, might as well market to 'em.

Courtesy of many readers, here's the text of the e-mail:

Thanks so much for your interest in Pacific Rim and our reusable shopping bag offer. Our "Save Water/Drink Riesling" campaign (promoting conservation of our precious rivers) seems to have struck a chord with our fans. The positive response to our bag offer has been so overwhelming that - as a small, independently-owned winery - we simply do not have the resources to fulfill all the bag requests.

However, it's sincerely important to us that we provide you with a "make good" limited-time offer exclusively available to people inquiring about our reusable shopping bag. We've created what we hope is a mind-blowing discount on our two most popular wines: purchase 3 bottles of Dry or Sweet Riesling and receive an additional BONUS BOTTLE and FREE SHIPPING. That's a 50% SAVINGS and a $30 VALUE. The offer expires midnight June 30th, and is limited to 1 order per household.

A little background: we produced enough bags to meet our projected demand based on a small-scale retail promotion featured on select Pacific Rim wines. Our primary hope was to generate awareness of river conservation through this offer. We did not predict the popularity of the offer as it went viral online at "freebie" websites (which posted links to our special offer without permission). These websites boosted the demand to nearly 80,000 requests for the 3,000 bags we produced.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the overwhelming response we've received. We appreciate your flexibility and understanding. Again…we hope you will try Pacific Rim wines by taking advantage of our exclusive offer to purchase 3 bottles of Dry or Sweet Riesling and receive an additional BONUS BOTTLE and FREE SHIPPING.

Must be 21 years or older to participate.

Yours sincerely,

Pacific Rim Winery

The idea of asking permission to link to a Web site is rather quaint and amusing, though there's a difference between simply linking to a site, and encouraging people to sign up for a free deal. Lesson learned. And hey, now they have 77,000 extra people on their mailing list! Most of whom are probably about to leave that mailing list.

<![CDATA[ Are Cellphone Exclusivity Deals Bad For Consumers? ]]> Are cellphone exclusivity deals bad for consumers?Yesterday, four U.S. Senators sent a letter to FCC acting chairman Michael Copps requesting an investigation into whether exclusivity deals between handset makers and national carriers are ultimately good for consumers, and they plan to hold a hearing on the issue on Wednesday, June 16th. They join a growing number of people and organizations, including the Rural Cellular Association (RCA), who say exclusivity deals benefit no one but the carriers and manufacturers.

The primary concern for members of the RCA, which encompasses over 80 rural cellular carriers, is that by tying up new handset models with specific carriers the national companies are shutting out smaller carriers from competing. For consumers, the charge is that aside from generally limiting choice, exclusivity deals help create a digital divide by preventing customers in certain areas from access to the latest phone technologies.

Earlier this year, other parties also came out against carrier exclusivity deals:

The Consumers Union, the New America Foundation, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, as well as software provider Mozilla and small wireless carriers MetroPCS (PCS) and Leap Wireless International (LEAP), are lining up in opposition not only to the Apple-AT&T partnership, but to all manner of arrangements whereby mobile phones are tethered exclusively to a single wireless service provider.

But as CNET points out, the problem with breaking up the exclusivity party is that both manufacturers and carriers make a lot of money with the current arrangement, so they have zero incentive to change it.

For consumers, obviously if you could buy an LG Voyager, Palm Pre, or Apple iPhone and use it on any network you like, you'd have far more choice. The only consumers who can do that now are those with the technical savvy and contrarian DIY nature (not to mention the money to afford an unsubsidized phone) to go the jailbreak route, which isn't an ideal solution.

<![CDATA[ Walgreens Cancels EasySaver Program, But That Doesn't Mean You Can't Still Play "The Drugstore Game" ]]> play the Drugstore Game to save moneyMitchell wrote to us complaining about Walgreen's decision to cancel its EasySaver Rebate program, where customers could submit multiple rebate requests at once and get the money back along with a 10% bonus applied to a gift card. Although the program is no longer with us, it's still very possible to game the reward/discount systems at Walgreens and other chain drugstores to accumulate huge savings. Sometimes you can even make money back.

Mitchell writes:

I've faithfully diverted all of my drugstore business over the last few years to Walgreens because of their super EasySaver Rebate Catalog. Where else could you buy stuff, collect all your receipts and send them to one place each month and get your rebates back plus a 10% kicker on a Walgreens gift card. Late last year when they went to full online submission, this was awesome. No postage, no writing out forms and circling receipts.

The first of May, my local Walgreens had a black xerox'd sign saying the program had been abruptly discontinued. I sense they want to punish those coupon kickers instead with lots of addtional hoops to jump through.

Now I have to shop at other drugstores again.

Mitchell, shopping at other drugstores again is a good thing, if you do it correctly! In fact, with a little planning you can actually make special offers pay for the other necessities that aren't on sale.

Cathy at Chief Family Officer calls this "The Drugstore Game," and says the best place to start looking for advice on how to do it is read the posts at Money Saving Mom. In its simplest form, your goal is to take advantage of affinity programs and weekly specials at CVS, Rite Aid, and Walgreens to earn discounts that are bigger than the cost of the product(s). For an example, here's a CVS tip from last week's Money Saving Mom blog:

When you buy 2 Neutrogena sun care of or sunless tanning products, you get $10 ECBs [ExtraCare Bucks] (Limit 1). Buy 2 Neutrogena Ultra Sheer SPF 55 1 oz. tubes at $1.99, you'll earn $10 ECBs. So you'll pay $3.98 plus tax out of pocket and get $10 ECBs back!

The biggest mental block to doing this sort of thing is the resistance to buying stuff you don't need right away, or at all. For the "don't need right away" problem, the solution is to learn to love stockpiling; you'll need that third tube of toothpaste someday, so it's not a wasted purchase. For the other problem, you can always give away or donate the things you don't need. As long as it pays for itself and offsets the cost of what you really need, it's a good deal.

MSN Money's moneyblog says that actually, Walgreen's new Register Rewards can net you bigger savings than the old EasySaver program if you shop carefully:

Tara [at Deal Seeking Mom] provided some [Walgreens] examples. For instance, buy Colgate Sensitive toothpaste for $4.49 and get $4.49 in Register Rewards. Combine that with a $1 printable coupon for one tube and it's "better than free after coupon and RRs," she said.

It takes some planning and consistent monitoring to maximize your savings, but our point to Mitchell and others who miss the old Walgreens system is that you shouldn't shop exclusively at one drugstore chain anyway—the best way to save (or even make) money is to bounce back and forth among all of them depending on what you need and what deals they're offering this week.

(Just make sure that your CVS cashier gives you the entire receipt when you pay.)

<![CDATA[ Baseball Tickets Become Affordable Again As Recession Hits Scalpers ]]> Following up on yesterday's roundup of recession-related deals, here is an article from Forbes on how scalpers, season ticket holders, and teams themselves are cutting deals on baseball tickets, with below-cost tickets, BOGO deals, and cheap food.

Even StubHub has some cheap tickets, with tickets to some Western and Central Division games going for less than half face value. Of course, if you're trying to go to a tiny, historic stadium like Wrigley or Fenway, you're not going to have much luck (although we've always been able to get into Fenway for relatively cheap by scanning craigslist the day of the game).

Besides checking out these deals, we have two more tips for baseball fans looking to save money:

Growing up in between the Red Sox, Yankees, and Mets, we were often unable to convince our family to go see any of these teams because of all the supplemental expenses like parking, food, and drinks (as a result, we caught quite a few Bridgeport Bluefish games). When we moved to DC, we were thrilled to learn that both the Orioles and Nationals let fans bring in their own food and (non-alcoholic) drink, which cuts down on costs significantly. We wonder how many other stadiums do this. Update: Apparently Fenway and Yankee Stadium, as well as several other stadiums, allow this, so it turns out our parents were just making excuses not to drive up to Boston.

Check out the minor or independent leagues. This is a good way to see up and coming players, current stars rehabbing from injuries, and has beens. We mentioned the Bridgeport Bluefish before: we watched them play the Long Island Ducks a few years ago and were amazed to see John Rocker on the mound.

<![CDATA[ IKEA's Memorial Day Deals Sound Nice If You Can Find Them ]]> IKEA says no to your deal hunting. One thing we've always hated about shopping at IKEA is how their inventory varies so much from website to store to store, making it hard to track down something you wanted to purchase. Their big Memorial Day sale is no better. Tracy was checking out the website and flyers for the sale and noticed some fine print at the bottom.

The RITVA curtains are on sale on Sunday only, except in the Paramus, NJ location, where they're on sale on Monday only. What's more, "all offers not valid" at the Charlotte, Houston, Stoughton, and Tampa stores, as well as at IKEA Direct. We don't know if that means select offers will be valid, or if they're not participating at all. Oh, do you want to use that breakfast coupon? It's not valid at the Charlotte, Hicksville, Houston, Pittsburgh, Stoughton or Tampa locations, as well as at IKEA Direct.

It's annoying because sales like this tend to bring in shoppers, which means those stores that aren't participating will still benefit from the larger marketing push while not actually offering the deals their shoppers are looking for.

If you actually want to take advantage of anything being promoted on the website or in the flyer, you'd better call your nearby store before heading out there to confirm that it will be in stock and be on sale. Or you can stay home and save your money this weekend, and wait until IKEA can get all of its stores to agree to participate equally in what's being promoted as a national sale.
